For your consideration is this 19th century. Primitive, wheel thrown stoneware pottery chicken waterer. It will hold at least 1/2 gallon of water. It is filled through the mouth, and refills as the chickens drink. It is 8 1/2" high and 6" at its widest point. It does show wear, since it was actually used. Water your own chicks with it, or display it as a piece of primitive art! It was made by Dalton Pottery, as shown on the piece. I am very pleased to offer for your consideration this wonderful Southern chicken waterer in a 1 gallon size. It is 9" tall and measures 7 1/2 across the base. Southern poultry fountains and chicken waterers are not common. And this one, having an odd form and Bristol slip glaze is particularly unusual. I believe that I bought this piece out of Texas several years ago, but I do not know if it was made there, Alabama or where. Please see the pictures and make your own judgement per attribution. The piece is in good condition overall. It has a chip off the finial as pictured, but no other condition issues to note. Please note the almost white Kaolin clay that shows along the finial. This jug is 9 1/2 inches tall in very good condition with the Meaders green running glaze also called"tobacco spit" glaze. It does have 1 small chip on the bottom(see picture) where it stuck to the bottom of the kiln-other than that no cracks or other chips. Nice display piece certainly not a more commonly found red wing piece. Very highly desirable. Finding one of these in pristine condition is quite rare almost always found with a hairline or chips for what they were used for i'm sure the top was dropped on the bottom several time in its life. Lettering all still strong and easily read. Glaze is good over entire piece. Piece is approx. 7" in diam. and 10" tall, base is 1" tall at rim and 12" in diam. weights approx. 9 LBS. Piece will be safely packed. In the front there is a hairline crack(pictured) that runs from the bottom to the top end, On back there is a chip( pictured) and a hairline crack. This is an old vintage DAISY poultry waterer float. This would maintain the water level in the poultry/chicken water dispenser. It was probably used on larger poultry/chicken ranches/farms. Vintage Glass Chicken Waterer 1872 Patent Self Dispensing Water Supply Has Chip
This is a vintage chicken waterer. Popular on farms many years ago for providing drinking water for the chicken flock. It is made of glass, has a projection in the center with a groove down it. It is used with a quart Mason jar, and to use, you fill the Mason jar with water, place the waterer upside down into the jar opening, so the projection goes into it, then holding the waterer against the mason jar, you upend the jar, so the waterer is on the bottom. Water will then feed into the circular trough as needed. A simple but effective device, with the marks PATENTED and NO 126997. It was actually patented May 21 1872, and there is information on these on the internet. In the course of use these usually got chips, especially at the bottom. This one does have a small chip along the lower rim. The last three photos show the chip in the center ... moreof the photos. You can barely feel it, just a little chip, but it reduces the value somewhat. When you look at other waterers like this being sold on ebay, you will see that most of them have chips, and larger chips than this. Makes an interesting farm collectible, or, can be used to water your chickens, or could be used for hummingbirds or other wildlife. Mason jars are available. This is a very old brown crockery chicken waterer. This glaze. I believe dates it from between 1880- 1920. There is not a potter mark that I can find. It's 8" tall and 5.75" in diameter. At first looks like a little brown jug. But no handle, no spout, and no bottom. There is a small rectangular hole near the bottom. To allow the water to come out, it's only.25" by 1" in size. It would have had a large crockery tray with a lip underneath. To hold the water. I've seen this brown glaze referred to as"brown drip" as well as"Albany slip. There are some firing marks around it. That may look like chips in the pictures, they are not. There are some small glaze chips at the bottom. From chicken beaks probably. There is a hairline crack on the bottom half. All in all. Western Pottery Denver Colorado Stoneware Chicken Waterer Jug Hand Made
This stoneware chicken waterer is marked on the front: THE WESTERN POTTERY CO. MADE IN DENVER" The jug measures 12 7/8" tall by 9" wide across the base. This is a very unusual piece of stoneware. It looks like they took a standard jug and then hand worked it by plugging the hole at the top and then cutting across the back base and pushing it in. Then adding a band of clay for a lip to keep the water at a certain level. The waterer is in good condition but does have a 3/4" flat chip above the embossing on the rim and a thin flat 5/8" surface flake to the left of that. The base has a thin curved crack where the added clay pulled away from the existing base. The remainder shows surface wear from usage and a couple of surface crazing lines. I am currently testing different ways of keeping the waterer from freezing, but they are expensive. How many birds will one bucket water? There are a lot of variables involved. The most I have had served by one bucket is 50 birds.
