Not for modulating flow, must be either fully open or fully shut. Appears to have been properly operated that way, as the gate and seats have nice crisp edges, not visibly worn by silt or silica. Looks like it will shut with minimal seepage, maybe none, but no guarantee of shutting totally dry. Valve should sand- or glass bead-blast clean and beautiful, but be sure to do this first before disassembly, with rubber hose around the stem compressed ... moreand tightly butted against the bonnet, and the gate fully shut!
