Electronic Memoribilia Oak Ridge National Laboratory, TN. Resistor/Shunt Boxes
OAK RIDGE. TN NATIONAL LABORATORY MEMORABILIA These items were used years ago in the Oak Ridge National Laboratory where work was done on the WWII nuclear bombs. I can't say way exactly where they were used in the plant or for what purpose. They were obtained at auction and I was told they have been checked for any harmful products and cleared by their contractors. These are now more conversation pieces than anything else. The black faced item is a decade resistor box where the user can dial up any particular resistance they may need for a circuit. The other one is a shunt used for bypassing current around sensitivity meters and such. The resistor decade box still works fine but I didn't check the shunt. The ORNL occasionally has auctions to sell surplus or outdated equipment on occasions. These items were obtained legally at one ... moreof these auctions. As for the historical value. Where and how they were used is not known by me. The decade resistor box has engraved writing on the bottom edge that reads: AEC-ORNL-X-33469 If you enlarge the last picture, you might see this inscribed on the edge of the black front cover. The box material is real wood and not plastic. The face and dials of the resistor box are made of a composite material similar to hard plastic. Defects! The shunt box has one of the round wooden feet missing. You can see this in picture 3. The wood is in good sound condition but does have the occasional gouges. Scrapes and scratches from use. Once again let me say I can certify where these items came from but I do not know the exact era they were used in. Where or how they were used. Any further research would be up to the buyer. There are metal plates on both items that have information and the company that made them. Both have stickers that look like certification dates where they were checked for accuracy.
