The instrument is in very good vintage condition. The instrument body has the original green/grey coating in excellent(not perfect) condition. There is a small amount of pitting on the metal swing away eyepiece. The black boxes that hold the glass bottles with dried up chemicals are very nice and speak to the historical value of the piece. Why use a Refractometer you ask? Are you tired of not hitting your desired target gravities? Have you tried to cool a large sample so you could use a hydrometer and see what your gravity is? A refractometer allows you take instant gravity readings, with just one drop, at any point during the boil, or even during the run off of the sparge during an all-grain brew. HUMPHREY MODEL 599 AUTOMATIC REFRACTOMETER/KARATOMETER NICE Description. Fine used Humphrey Instruments model 599 Automatic Refractometer/Keritometer. This unit was government surplus and seems to have had light use and good care. I know little about instruments like this so I tried to learn what I could from internet sites and ebay ads for the same item. Here is what I found: The 599 turns on and finds its reference position easily. The movements in automatic and manual modes are smooth and precise. The CRT screen is bright with good contrast and no flickers or lines. All buttons and the joystick work well. The printer had some paper in it so I was able to see that it works like it should with no problems. I tried checking the eyes of a couple of friends and it seemed to do what it was supposed to do. It started by focusing on the right ... moreeye. The spoked wheel icon inside became visually clear to the subject and the 599 computed the results. Then it shifted its attention from the right to the left eye. Focused on it and computed results for that eye as well. Then the results were printed by the internal printer. That is all I knew how to try on this machine. I would expect it needs to be calibrated if you want to be sure the results are accurate. Overall it is in excellent physical condition and shows little use. Included with the device(but not shown in the pictures) is a hospital grade power cord. Serial cable for an external printer(I think) and its original plastic protective tent/cover to keep it dust free when not being used. This is a National Industrial Supply salinity refractometer. It has a dual scale. Specific Gravity and Parts Per Thousand. S.G. is 1.000-1.070 and ppt is 0-100. I originally bought this for homebrewing beer, but realized too late that it was for salinity, not sugar content. My mistake is your gain! I have set no reserve on this item because I have no use for it whatsoever. I have already calibrated it, so you should be good to go out of the box. Condition of the refractometer is like new and comes with everything it would if purchased new. Calibration screwdriver. Here is a pre-owned salt water aquarium Salinity tester. Made by Marine Depot. This is Model MD2101. This was used for a short time. Before retiring our salt water aquarium, due to lack of time. THe refractometer works by simply placing a few drops of water on the front lens. Then looking through the adjustable eyepiece at the meter scale readings. This is easy to calibrate. Using a few drops of distilled water, and adjusting the screw accordingly. Range of testing is 0-28% And division 0.20% The kit comes with the refractometer. Pipette, screwdriver, and padded case.
