VTG Justrite Carbide Head Lamp, Miners Lamp, Cap Lamp, Hard Hat Lamp
I have two Justrite carbide head lamps for sale in separate auctions. One is horizontal and the other is vertical. This is the horizontal model and is marked"Trade Mark Justrite Made in U.S.A. Pat. Applied For" on the side of the upper chamber. On the bottom is a small incised number 019 with possibly another number in front of it. This horizontal model is the older of the two carbide lamps at circa 1912 from what I can learn from other websites. I acquired these head lamps at an auction about 25 years ago. The things with it were from California's gold country and I assume were used in the mines of northern California. This horizontal lamp is about 3/3/4 in. tall and 3 in. wide at the top if you include the hook at the back. The diameter of the bottom is 2 in. The round reflector is 2 1/2 in. It weighs a little less than 6 ... moreoz. These little lights were also called cap lamps because they fit on the front of a cap. They were also used on bicycles. And larger ones in older Model T Ford head lights, and lighthouses. Their advantage over previous mine lighting was that they gave off less CO2, didn't consume 02 and they were very hot in a cold cave. And they produced a very bright light. They are pretty simple little devices with a water chamber on top and a carbide container on the bottom. You set the drip of the water with the lever on the top. The chemical reaction creates a gas that burns. You can ignite it with the little built in striker on the front of the reflector plate, or light it with a match. They last about 4 hours. This lamp has been very used and still has dirt. Soot and carbide ash on it and in it. I really like it that way. All the moveable parts move and I can't see any parts missing. 3 Date 1901-1912-1913 Brass Justrite Carbide Lamp Beaded Base Oval Curved Cap
Lamp is made of brass and shows some light dings here and there. One bigger edge dent to the right of the name JUSTRITE and the Pat dates. and one on the edge of the reflector shield. Needs a flint and the flint holder opens fine. Some carbide stains inside the bottom. Cap opens easy. No marks on the bottom. Reflector is soldered on and not removeable. Gasket is present and soft. Antique Carbide Miner's Light "Justrite Streamlined" C.1900
There is no reserve on this great antique carbide Miner’s Light. Here we have an antique Miner’s lamp marked the“Justrite Streamlined” on the top. There is a hard rubber band called an“Air Cooled Grip” around the bottom tank. It is all brass with a chrome shade and is in good condition. Everything unscrews smoothly and easily. The lid to the tank doesn’t"snap" into place so it may need some adjusting. These were used a great deal in the early part of the 20 th century. But were pretty much phased out by the 1930’s. This is a Justrite manufactured in the USA(photo7) carbide miners lamp. It's a nice looking lamp. Suitable for display. If you have plans to use this as a mining lamp. Sorry but this is a non-functioning lamp. The bottom section. Which holds the water does not come off( I'm told it is suppose to) The on-off switch at the top(photo# does move right and left. But not to the far edges. The flint lighting wheel does turn, but there is no flint. The reflector is in pretty good shape. All in all I think this would make a nice display on a bookshelf. Old Rare Justrite Safety Gas Can Brass Plaque Primitive shop fuel can
Up for sale is this used Rare Old Justrite Safety Gas can. This particular can has a Justrite Brass plaque on the front. As the pictures show. This can has all the signs of a very used can. It's greasy, dirty, has missing paint, dings, and scratches. The inside is also dirty. The Grip handle Flip top does function and the spring is strong. The can is 6 3/4" Tall, 4 3/4" wide across the bottom 1 pound 11 ounces in weight. I have not tested the can for leaks. This would make a cool primitive shop display. I don't know the capacity of the can but I would put it at 2 pints, maybe. I have not seen one like this small or this unique. Please refer to the pictures for the best description. As with most eye cups the cup itself is 1.5" x 1" This almost has an opalescent look when held to the light. We are unable to discern the lettering on the bottom. Item number two is a crystal eye cup with a cursive"Justrite" and w.b.m. co. embossed on bottom. It stands 2.5" x 1.75. The third item is a plain crystal cup measuring 2.5 x 1.75 and has no printing on bottom. Lid is for An-Du-Septic but the bottom says Justrite. They appear to work together but the lid has a different finish to the inside then the Justrite. Not sure exactly how old they are look to be pre-1950 but not sure. Still has about half to a third of the chalk still in the tin. Chalk is packed in saw dust. Tin is in fairly good used shape. Has a dent to the top on the back side. Feels like where you would grab the tin to open it. Some wear to the paint. Spot on the top and on the back side.
