This very old 19th century advertising card is for A. Heineman. A clothier in Philadelphia, Pa. Card front pictures a sailboat coming into a city. Card back shows company address at 825 Market Street(under the Central Avenue Hotel) It also explains that they are“wholesale and retail dealer in Gents’ Furnishing Goods, principal depot for German knit jackets, and manufacturer of shirts” Over 20 years ago. I purchased a whole box of these cards at an estate sale and have stored them away since that time. I’m going to start selling them on EBAY. Based on the dates I see on similar cards in the box, I believe this card is from the late 19th century, probably in the 1880’s or 1890’s. Size is 3” by 4 3/4” Card is in real nice shape with minor wear. It will be shipped between 2 pieces of cardboard. A tradecard is about the size of a 3x5” index card and typically has a nice picture with advertising slogan on the front side. And full advertising text(and sometimes testimonials) on the back side. They were popular between 1880-1900 time period of the Victorian era. Local merchants and street walkers would hand them out for free as a cheap and effective way to advertise products and services. A local store would sometimes stamp their name on the back. Some trade cards were beautiful, some funny, some had puzzles, and some were risque. RARE WWI Royal Flying Corps / RAF "Flying Clothing Card" and other paperwork
Named collection of paperwork/ documentation to a WWI RFC/ RAF fighter pilot. This icludes his"Record of flying clothing issued" card. Which lists items such as: Boots, thigh(known as"Fug" boots) Cap, furlined, Gauntlets, Goggles mask, jacket, leather and more. Dated 12th May 1918. With this are a wad of his mess bills from the same pilot. These have some very interesting human history and list such things as Furniture, Bar account, Teas, washing, etc. Some are from Duxford- one of the most famous airfields in Enfland and others from Dublin(then part of the UK) Of added interest to stamp/ philately collectors are that 3 of the bills are signed over"penny red" postage stamps which was the common way of"notarizing" payments in those days. The penny red stamps alone have some value. These were soaked and removed from a dilapidated scrap album. Dated 1882. They are in excellent vintage condition, slightly wavy. They are copyrighted 1881. Each measures 3" by 4 1/2" They are all the same size, and I do not believe any have been trimmed, their borders are off simply because they were cut off-center originally. 1917 ~ HOUSTON TEXAS ~ Mens Clothing ~ STUART TRAVIS ILLUSTRATED Calendar Card
For auction here is a wonderful Stuart Travis illustrated advertising calendar card from Houston. Texas. The calendar itself is dated, August 1917, while the copyright for the illustration is dated 1914. The card is distributed by Hutchinson& Mitchell of Houston, Texas- a men's clothier located downtown on Main Street. Depicting a lovely summer romance at the beach, the illustration is titled by Travis, To Be Continued. The illustration colors are remarkably vivid and crisp. Measuring 3.25" x 6" The card is also well-kept with no stains, nicks, or tears anywhere. There is less-than-normal yellowing of the background, and just a few light age spots in the upper left corner(which also exhibits a small bump) The back is blank and shows some minor aging- nothing much. All in all. A neat little, well preserved Stuart Travis illustrated ... moreadvertising calendar card with a Houston. Texas association. 1900 Cabinet Card African American Children in Alley Ragged Clothing Bare Feet
This is a very nice cabinet card of a group of African American children standing in an alley. They are all barefoot and several of them have damaged or ill fitting clothing. Some have big smiles, one looks like he might be crying. The photo is clean and views well, but is somewhat faded. There is no photographer or date given, but it appears to date to the mid 1890's to the early 1900's. The photo was found in Richmond Virginia, and the architecture is consistent with the city's Jackson Ward or Church Hill neighborhoods, but there is nothing definitive. The back of the photo is blank The mount is a 5.5 inch square, the photo is 3 7/8ths inches. This was in a large group of African-American photos, I will be posting others in the next several days.
