C. 1820-40 Item# 130102WPP16 This is a simply gorgeous Early American Pennsylvania Pine Jelly Cupboard crafted during the second quarter of the 19th Century. While a good quantity cabinets and cupboards of the period survive. This piece is characterized by the best of Pennsylvania craftsmanship. Featuring a single solid board of pine on the top, dovetailed along the edges with exposed joints to the sides of the case, the molding around the top is of unusually good quality. Tightly carved and pinned to the case at equal intervals, it projects over the overall square form embellished with multiple layers of molding and tight incised scratched-beading. The triple-paneled door is a work of art. Each panel deeply chamfered on the interior and set into rabbet ... morecuts in the frame. The entire frame of the door features pegged through-tenon-mortise construction, allowing the wood to easily expand and contract while maintaining control over the structure; the door swings freely on original forged iron hinges. The lock is absent and a later bracket was installed on the door to assist in keeping the cabinet closed, the round wooden knob above the keyhole likely also an addition. The sides of the case are solid planks of pine from top to bottom. The outermost backboards finished on the edges to become part of the case sides, also continuing down into full rear feet. The backboards run vertical to the case, each being tacked with neat even rows of large square forged iron nails. The interior of the case is a somewhat graduated shelved space, the full length solid planks creating outstanding depth to the cupboard. This form of cupboard is incredibly utilitarian in any home of matching decor. Easily utilized in any room: a display cabinet in the living room, a very easily accessibly chest of drawers in the bedroom, a linens and towel cabinet in the guest bedroom or dressing room and as a cupboard for the fine china in the dining room. This hanging meat safe is a great primitive and can be either hung up as it was originally used or free standing as you see it. Years ago meat was stored in a cool basement but was hung high to keep out animals. This one is grain painted in a gold or light oak looking finish. There is wear to the paint since it is so old. There are also some stains to the top surface. It is constructed of pine with screen on 2 sides and the single door. The tabs at the top have holes for threading a pipe through for hanging. The back is constructed of horizontal boards. Measurements are 36" high including the tabs. 31" wide and 18" deep. The shelves are slatted for air circulation and are removable. Antique Primitive Painted Oak PIE SAFE 4 doors 2 drawers Needs Work. I've used this old pie safe in my pantry for years. I believe it to date from about 1900. It stands 70 1/4 inches high. 37 3/4 inches across and 17 inches deep. It features 2 top doors with 2 shelves. 2 drawers, and 2 bottom doors with 2 shelves. Hardware is original. And you'll notice the lovely wood handles. It appears to be oak under many layers of chipped paint. The piece has so much character. And although it is a heavy, sturdy piece, it is a bit of a project. The corner of a door needs gluing. The grilling needs some tacks, and the bottom shelf needs a bracket. I like the paint the way it is, but it does need cleaning up. Refinishing is an option, also. You'll notice that the very top of the pie safe does not appear to be original. N ormal and expected wear for a 60-70 year old shop cabinet/desk: surface scratches all over. Rusted areas mostly on bottom of cabinet– some scattered rust marks and pitting here and there on sides, top and inside cabinet. Doors and drawers open and close fine. No lock on internal safe– has been replaced by prior owner with a porcelain knob– slightly bent upper edge rim in front of lock(probably pried open at some time in the past to get the safe open) Top lid of cabinet has kinks and dents around the rim edge but looks fine and closes snugly on the top. Locks are present on outside door(outside door lock has key) and on top lid(no key- takes a flat key which can made by a locksmith) The drawers all have 1930s-40s era plaid paper protectors laid in. This is a Mosler filing cabinet safe. It was used by the Fed Gov't in D.C. and sold at auction. Model# SF-C5. It has five drawers that are for legal size documents. The drawers are 16" wide, 10" high and 24" deep. The cabinet is 5 feet high, 20" wide and 28" deep. IT WEIGHS 600 POUNDS. No kidding, there's a plate on the base saying so. It has a 3 digit combination, which I do have and will give to the buyer. It can be opened and closed without locking by using the latch and not spinning the dial. Close the doors, turn the latch, turn the dial and it's locked. This Mosler 5 drawer legal size safe is a monster and the perfect solution to storing your valuables. Gold, silver, ammo, passport, tax returns, or other important papers. Combination is known and any competent locksmith should be able to change it to your own in under an hour. This particular file safe was built in 1989 and at one time stored classified information for the Army in Maryland. You won't find anything like these at your local wally world or office warehouse! Three shelf spaces and a surprise, behind the hinged door is a metal safe. I collect arts and crafts furniture, but I have never seen this piece before. It is not marked so I do not know the maker, though the owner thought it was made by one of the Stickley brothers. In very nice antique vintage condition with some wear to the top finish, including a little squiggle line that goes into the surface of the wood. Wear is as you would expect with the age. Great piece that displays very nicely, shelves for storage and even a safe- please note the safe does not have a lock but one could easily be inserted by a locksmith. Made by a gentleman in rural North Carolina who takes old wood, refinishes it and makes it into furniture. Much detail. Shelves inside. In great condition- right door does bow out just slightly in the bottom left corner.
