Black Forest Carved Wood Bear & Tree Thermometer on Milk Glass
This is not signed. But I think it’s a modest Black Forest carving. Because of the extra little detail and paint on the bear’s face, the dual thermometer scale, the thin milk glass backing on the thermometer, and the fact that the thermometer is glass and filled with what it’s filled with. On the other hand, it's fairly lightweight and looks a little like pine) 5 ¾” overall on a 3” x 2” base. A carved bear walks by a droopy pine tree carved and fit into a slot in the base. Great face on the bear; good precise graphics on the glass. The thermometer works. Up for Bid is a used Galileo Liquid Spheres thermometer in excellent condition. The spheres rise and sink based on the temperature. The principle of the thermometer is that the liquid in the spheres expand and contract as the temperature rises and lowers. This changes the volume of the liquid and the air inside the closed glass spheres causing them to sink or rise. The lowest sphere in the upper part of the chamber is the temperature. This thermometer is a Fahrenheit model and the temperature tags are gold-plated. It is meant for indoor use. It is beautiful to look at.
