VINTAGE MUSICAL POWDER BOX This box is 5.25" diameter across base and 2.5" tall(without feet) It is all metal and has a gold-painted wooden bottom with 3 wooden feet that are painted red. The wind-up key is also on the bottom. The picture is of a man and woman courting. Beautiful condition on this lovely piece. The color is very even and nice low luster. There is a few white spots to the aluminum. I took pictures of all sides. The puff came with the piece. And I don't know if it is the original one, but the color matches nicely and it fits perfectly. From circa 1900• Measures: 4 13/16" wide. About 4 1/4" tall• It has a shallow dish to rest the puff in. The music box works. If you wind with the cover on. You do not hear the music.when you take the cover off, you hear the music. When you close the cover while the music play, it shuts off the music. Rene Lalique 1920: Rare Aluminum Powder Box "Fleurs d'Amour" for Roger & Gallet.
As early as 1913. French parfumeur Roger& Gallet had approached René Lalique to create the"mother of all powder boxes" price being no objection as it was destined for ladies of the highest status in Parisian life. At that time, the most precious of all materials was aluminum, a revolutionary new metal, light, soft and pliable, comparable in price only to platinum today or vicuña for fabrics. Lalique tried to buy some aluminum, but was never able to do so as the military had a monopoly and used every ounce manufactured in their budding air force. WW1 did not help and it was not before 1920 that he was able to secure enough Lbs to manufacture 2,000(some say 3,000) One Lb went far, it could produce around 30 boxes. The cost was so extravagant that even Roger& Gallet balked at it and exceptionally allowed other parfumeurs ... moreto pitch in and buy a few boxes with the same design, sometimes 50, sometimes in the single digits. However, they insisted that only Roger& Gallet would be able to engrave their name under the bottom. Competitors had to leave a blank base and write their names on a label or the outside box. It is believed that 20% of the total was made for"outsiders" Here is an original Roger& Gallet box. Recognizable by the inscriptions under the base(photo 5) On the top. The decor is one of"Flowers of Love" some luxuriant flowers and foliage shaped as bird wings, which explains why the box is sometimes called"parakeets" by non-cognoscenti. Some of these boxes were done in an ochre patina, this is one and the patina is well preserved. The dimensions are 3cm(1.2" in height and 7.5 cm(3" in diametre. The signature"LALIQUE" is etched along the top rim. The box is not in the Marcilhac book(the unofficial Lalique bible) as Marcilhac only dealt with pieces made of glass or crystal, but it can be found in many other books such as Nick Dawes's"Lalique" or Mark Moran's excellent"Warman's Lalique" At the end

A lovely powder puff music box dating to the 1930s or 1940s. Made of brushed aluminum and has a band of blue around the base. The lid is blue as well. With a metal floral ornament with blue stone in the center. Inside there is room for your rings or other jewelry treasures. The box stands a bit more than 3 inches high and measures about 4-3/8 inches across the base. It stands on three little ornamental feet. The bottom is made of wood. And the original label is still in place- the label is a bit worse for wear as you can see in the photo but retains a good portion of the original picture and name of the song. I can see in bright light a very tiny shallow dent along the side of the lid. It measures less than 1/8 of an inch. Possibly one on the lid to the left side. But I can't tell if its part of the design or not. If it is, its' small. Lovely ochre color stain. 2 birds entwined and the stamped signature of Lalique along the rim. So many of these boxes didn't survive without dents due to the soft nature of the aluminum. This one is really nice, especially with the powder still inside. Fresh from a lovely old estate. Top is a lovely aluminum confection with a flower bud as a lid. It works- I think. Had to hammer the edges of the lid for it to fit, but it's hammered aluminum, so I'm satisfied.
