J.D. Christian 2 Drum Waterfall Winch Marine Salvage towing lifting rigging
For Auction- 1- J.D. Christian 2 drum waterfall winch. This winch was used to pull barges on a cradle up a set of rails on the Kanawha River. It is a model 316OU and was manufactured in July of 1945. It has two main drums and a third auxiliary drum. All three are gear driven and have band brakes. They also each have a capstan on the outside. I am sure the brake banding is no good. Each of the two drums has what we would call a jaw clutch. The winch was driven by a Buda 6 cylinder engine that is probably not operational. The stack has been open to the weather. We have not tried to start it. There is a snap clutch followed by a multispeed gearbox of some sort. In front of the operator is another gearbox of some sort operated by one of the three large handles in form or the seat. There is 3/4" cable on the drums but it is rusted and will ... moreneed replaced. Overall. The winch is in pretty good condition. Of course it is rusted and will require a great deal of work, freeing and cleanup to operate. It will most likely need to be repowered as well. The operators station has 3 large levers. Here is a pair of prints taken from engraved plates of British Admiralty ships. The originals were used to identify the names of the spars and various standing and running rigging. One plate is inscribed"Engraved for the Encylepoedia Londinesis. 1827" These were originally purchased by me from a dealer in Essex CT to be mounted in the main salon of a sailboat. The frames were recently refinished making for a beautiful set of matted and framed prints. The frame size is 12 5/8" X 10 1/8" The image size is 8 3/8" X 5 5/8" See my other auctions for nice. Back in the 1800's every sailing ship had sails and rope lines(rigging) Often the rope knots would tighten up so tight that they required hard work to loosen them up. A marlin spike was used to peel them apart. Also, pounding on the knot in one direction and then another would help loosen it. To pound on the knot they used a rigging billy. This club is 18" long and almost 7" around at the fat end(2" in diameter) Often the rigging club was used in hand-to-hand combat. Rare Vintage Logging RIGGING HAMMER Camp 6 Museum Spar Pole Blocks Pulleys
This hammer cam from Camp 6 logging Museum that closed down around 2011. I have never seen a tool like this one and am not really up on rigging tools. I believe this was used by a logger who would climb the spar poles to set up the rigging. The five foot long rope is braided at the hammer and tied off with fine rope at the other end. Steel marlin like spike that also acts as the handle for the hammer. Overall length is 16 1/2' The head looks to be about a 2 lb blacksmith peen. Head is tight on handle. Well made interesting logging tool.
