Iron Lincoln Pin from a Link and Pin Coupling on a Logging Train This Pin Was Found near Driftwood. Pa. and used in the 1800's When Driftwood was a Boom Town for the Logging Industry The link and pin coupling(Lincoln Pin" was the original coupling used on American Railways. The link and pin coupling system consisted of a coupling pocket receiver. An oblong link, and securing pin. The oblong link was placed into the pocket, and the pin was dropped through the receiver securing the link. The other end of the link was connected to the coupling pocket of another car with another pin. This job was very dangerous, and many brakemen lost fingers or entire hands when they did not get them out in time. Some workers were crushed between cars or dragged under cars that were coupled to quickly. You can see by the bend in this pin, what the force ... moreof 2 logging cars can do. This pin is 1 1/4 inches of solid iron. In 1893 the railroad unions fought for and won the passage of the Safety Appliance Act, outlawing the"old man-killer" link and pin coupler. This iron pin is almost 14 inches long. And has a bend in it. It was probably thrown to the side of the tracks, with a few good curse words, when it bent. The former owner didn't know if this pin was found on the main line running through Driftwood, or one of the many narrow gauge lines that were used for logging.
