I am still learning about Bakelite and celluloid and in regard to this stunning clasp. I lean more toward celluloid but I can't say with certainty. About the age, I am guessing. To me it looks like the 30's or 40's but I can also see it as Edwardian era. There are no markings to help. I bought a lot at an estate auction and this piece was included. There were a lot of very old buttons. Some of them were Edwardian and even Victorian but I don't think celluloid was used until some time in the 1870's. There is a little wear of the eye but the beauty of it is not diminished in the least. It measures about 5" hooked. It could do with a thorough cleaning. This piece is a place where art meets style!
