For your consideration is this very Vintage Antique 6” Inch Double Sided Dual Grit Whetstone& Mahogany Box for Knife. Razor, Blade, and Tool Sharping. The whetstone is in superior condition. Nearly pristine, and the box is in better than average condition for its age. Hey, it’s an antique and has character! This is actually a bench oilstone whetstone used for sharpening fine knives but could be used to sharpen almost anything. HISTORY: Discovered on the farm our family has owned since the 1860s in a barn near Ovilla. Texas(outside Waxahachie) the true age and grit sizes of this whetstone is unknown. There is no identifying manufacturer or label anywhere on the whetstone or mahogany box halfs. From research it appears like others from the 1920’s to WWII, maybe a little older. I’ve had it for well over 30 years and never used it once. DETAILS: ... moreWhat’s interesting is the fine grit side shows only faint wear. The coarse grit looks new which means it was probably used a few times to only sharpen fine knives. Odd for a farm because sharpening all kinds of things is a regular task. It still has a strong odor of honing oil after all these years. The whetstone was probably used with just the top off as a“bench stone” Finer grades of whetstones intended for use with oil are called oilstones. Oilstones usually come in the form of bench stones. The mahogany box condition is typical of farm use but still in very good condition for its age. Still tight with plenty of fine small nicks but no chips to the wood or paint splatter. Etc. Double sided whetstone or bench oilstone measures 6x2x1” and weighs 13.5 ounces. Mahogany half boxes when combined measure 6 ¾ x 2 ½ x 1 7/8” and weighs 8.1 ounces for a combined total weight of 21.6 ounces. Up for your consideration is this interesting old device with the markings"The American Stropper Co. Spiro-Strop- Pat, Oct. 29, 1919- Baltimore, Md. This is a 2 1/2 by 3 1/2 by 1 inch plated metal case. It has two cylinders inside which appear to be covered with leather or abrasive material. There is a slide-out center shaft with a groove, which we assume holds a razor blade to be inserted from the bottom for sharpening. There is a T-bar at the top of the case with a handle ring which pulls out and pushes in, powering two spiral shafts which twist the grooved center shaft from side to side. There is also a sliding 1 1/4-inch hatch cover on one ... moreside of the case, which may be slid open to reveal the"innards" of the device. You'll have to be the judge on how to mount the blade on the center shaft, and what types of blades it will accommodate! We are not sure of the base metals used in this piece. The outer case will not attract a magnet, but the T-bar and shaft components will. The wear to the plating on the hatch cover reveals what looks like brass. Hopefully, we have provided enough information for you to make your decision as to whether or not this is a piece you would like to add to your collection. CONDITION: Good. The piece appears to be complete and intact to us. There is some wear to the plating on the hatch cover. We have not polished the tarnished finish in any way. GEM Junior, Black Bakelite 3 Piece Razor, Twinplex Sharpener Year: 1940's(some unknown) Size: 3 1/4" Quantity: 3 razors. 1 twinplex blade sharpener Condition: I am not a razor collector. I have done my best to clean the items described in the auction. There are rust spots on the Twinplex and there are ware marks and some paint is missing. The bakelite razor has a chip in the handle. The GEM and Schick are in good condition but may need additional cleaning.
