This is a Canberra 2101N Transistor Reset Preamplifier. Note: The model 2101N is for Reverse Coaxial(REGe) detectors and matches Canberra's slimline cryostats. Traditional preamplifiers used on Ge detectors employ RC feedback. See figure 1 below. The feedback capacitor(Cf) establishes the charge gain for the detector(V0=Qin/Cf) and the feedback resistor(Rf) discharges the feedback capacitor with a time constant of Rf x Cf. The feedback resistor effectively must conduct the total detector current which flows as a result of leakage current and photon interaction. Leakage current is normally negligible leaving detector current directly proportional to the energy rate of photon interaction. The graph below shows the energy rate limit imposed vs. feedback resistor value for preamplifiers having a dynamic range of 20 volts which is typical ... moreof RC preamplifiers. If the feedback resistor value is lowered to increase the count rate limit. The noise increases and the resolution becomes worse. In addition, non-ideal behavior of components often leads to distorted pulse shapes which do not respond properly to pole-zero cancellation. This leads to resolution degradation at high count rates. The piece is 10cm by 10cm by 2cm thick and is clear from all six sides. It was used. But in excellent shape. No chips, dings, scratches. The material is Pilot U( or Bicron BC418) It is a type of scintillators that has fast timing resolution. Crystal scintillators such as NaI(Tl) BaF2 etc are good, but expensive and difficult to handle. Plastic scintillators has the advantage of cost and ease of use. Cesium Iodide Gamma Radiation Scintillation Detector Crystal for PMT & APD Probe
This is a small 11mm long by 9mm diameter Cesium Iodide scintillation crystal. It is an unfinished crystal blank. But could be easily polished up using fine grit sand paper and mineral oil, cleaned with DRY acetone, and glued to either a tiny PMT tube or a large area avalanche photodiode with high grade optical cement. This crystal isn't very hygroscopic like sodium iodide, but is shipped vacuum sealed as pictured with a strong desiccant to keep it fresh until you need it. It has an energy dependent response of the output wavelength- yellowish for short wave uv and x-rays and blue for hard gamma rays, making the material very useful for miniature nuclear spectrometers and the like. These crystals alone sell for over 300 dollars each. If this crystal does not sell this week, i'll make it into a complete working gamma ray detector head ... moreand relist it sometime in January. The CD V-710 is a portable monitoring instrument which measures gamma radiation dose rates as high as 50 roentgens per hour. It is designed to be used by radiological Civil Defense personnel in determining radioactive contamination levels that may result from an enemy attack or other nuclear disasters. Instrument accuracy on any of its three ranges is within ±20% of the true dose rate from Cobalt 60 gamma radiation. This accuracy is maintained throughout a temperature range of-20° F to +125° F. Relative humidities to 100% and at altitudes from sea level to 25,000 ... morefeet. The detecting element is an hermetically sealed ionization chamber. This chamber is located in the lower front portion of the instrument to make the instrument equally sensitive to radiation from the bottom and front. Here is a functioning Large Area detector. It is gas proportional. Currently set up for surveying walls as it has the handle attached and the half inch stand offs. I was able to test this detector several months ago and it worked as it should and has not been used since. Normal us is on the Ludlum 239-F1 floor monitor cart. This probe can be used that way also.
