This auction is for a vintage Homer Laughlin Company(HLC) 6 inch Saucer in the Orange color. Commonly known as"Radioactive Red" The bowls and dishes get their unique color by using naturally occurring Uranium compounds in the glaze.the result is a bright orange color as well as some residual radio-activity. This saucer can be used as a geiger check source to allow safe checking and operations of a Geiger counter or Scintillator system. Measuring the activity on a calibrated CDV-700 Geiger Counter using a pancake style probe, the total activity was roughly 29-30 KCPM, combined alpha/beta/gamma. The majority of activity is in the form of Beta with a small Alpha component and a very small gamma count. This particular saucer is slightly above average in activity for similar HLC dishes and saucers. Pancake probes are more sensitive than ... morea standard"Pickle" or"Hot Dog" style of probe, so your readings could be more or less than the readings I found, depending on the sensitivity of your probe. Pickle probes typically are about half as sensitive as a pancake probe and won't detect Alpha. The dish itself is in average condition with an average amount of wear, mostly around the center well where a coffee cup would sit. The pictures are from the actual item being auctioned. The dish is free from any other defects that I could see. The front and back of the dish are about equal in activity with the back being signed on the back with the Fiesta logo. This is a small 1cm diameter lithium iodide scintillation crystal. This crystal is from a SAIC neutron detector. It was originally coupled to a small PMT. It responds to FAST neutrons very well. So it may be of interest to fusor builders. Even though it is designed for neutrons, it still detects gamma rays too, just turn up the detector gain. The only difference is the spike of light with a neutron capure event is far brighter than any gamma event. This allows you to discriminate the energy by lowering the detector gain so normal gamma background is negligible. All you need to make your own detector head is a PMT tube or large area PIN photodiode detector. I have the suitable PIN photodiode in another listing with a couple high gain amplifier boards. This auction is for a vintage Knowles Utility Ware Ribbed Yellow Mixing Bowl with a slightly radioactive yellow glaze. The bowl measures roughly 5 1/2 inches tall and about 10 inches across the top.I'm guessing it is a 2 or 3 quart capacity. The glaze measured over 4000 CPM combined A/B/G using a modified CDV-700 Meter equipped with a pancake probe. Pancake probes are more sensitive than a standard"Pickle" or"Hot Dog" style of probe. So your readings could be more or less than the readings I found, depending on the sensitivity of your probe. Pickle probes typically are about half as sensitive as a pancake probe and won't detect Alpha. The bowl is in average shape for it's age with evidence of crazing and wear. There is a small chip on the bottom rim where the bowl would sit on a table, otherwise there are no ... moreother real issues other than the general wear. Hi. The items you are viewing are 2 very nice radiation survey meters in a radiation monitoring kit. The kit contains earphone, dosimeters and chargers and an excellent CDV700 and a CDV 715. There have been recent articles claiming radiation from Japan may be on its way to the US. There is also concern that a terrorist may set off a dirty bomb. So there may be some use for radiation survey meters. The 2 in the picture are older but have been kept very well. I have tested them and they work very well. The CDV 700 is a low range survey meter which may not respond to an intense high radiation field greater than 50 mr/hr. The CDV 715 is a higher range and can provide dose rate to 500 mr/hr. Also can be used for gamma spectroscopy(see picture) This spectrum is of rich thorite using a gamma spectacular set at 650 volts. Also shown is it responding to samples of uraninite and a uranium ore core sample. It has a bnc connector coming out of the detector. Scintillator by Precision Inst Model 111B Working with new batteries
This Scintillator is in the original box with leather case. Sample canister. Instructions, calibration disk and is completely working. This is many times more sensitive than a Geiger counter but only detects gamma rays. A new NaI crystal was added several years ago since the original turned yellow. My father bought this many years ago. I have also modified the battery box so it uses common batteries. I have loaded fresh batteries in it now. It uses 12 9V batteries one D cell and 1 C cell. These batteries will last a lot longer than the original ones since they are alkaline. One photo shows the result of calibration of the 0.8 mR/h disk on the 2.5 mR/h scale. Technical Associates Pug 1AB. Geiger Counter With End Window Detector
Included in the sale is a PDF version of the Manual Technical Associates has been manufacturing radiation detection equipment since before the Manhattan project. This unit is from the'80s- 90s. It is one of my favorites due to the unmistakable audio signal from the 3" speaker. The circuitry is relatively simple and this version has 4 ranges from X 1 to X1000. The highest range is very useful for employing more sensitive scintillation probes. I believe these originally came with lollipop probes with 2" pancake tubes. This one has an end window probe that was originally part of a military unit. It is an end window tube so the counter is still able to detect Alpha as well as Beta and Gamma. One photo shows it responding to a radioactive lantern mantle. This will be included in the sale. Please note that in that photo the Pug is ... moreset on the X10 range. This gives a idea of the sensitivity. This unit is great as is for identifying radioactivity but if it is to be used professionally it should be professionally calibrated. PS. This is a 5/8 inch diameter special alpha particle sensitive scintillation detector assembly used for a radon gas flow counter.
