The Kenwood TR2500 has many features for the 2 meter VHF 144-147.995 ham band. It is an old workhorse that works fine! The battery does not hold a charge. But it is available elsewhere. With the charging cradle and the Kenwood smc-25 Speaker mic it makes a pretty good base station. They are included as is a matching VB- 2530 Amplifier that was made to compliment the TR-2500. He worked for Motorola for 14 years servicing and repairing various radios with a total of 45 years industry experience. He had the highest level certification. This unit has been stored in a temperature controlled environment for"X" number of years. From a fine San Diego estate found under the seat of a 1979 Chev Suburban. It was connected to an SBE sidebander 2 CB radio.which I should add would not be a legal application. We had the amp tested by an advanced class HAM operator. Evaluation concluded 5 watts CW input yielded 85 watts or greater out on all bands 10-75 meters and 10 watts input on SSB yielded a maximum of 150 watts PEP on same bands. Test was into a dummy load using a SWAN watt meter. Receiver preamp also working as it should. Would be a great amp for QRP ham rig on CW. AM, FM or SSB. Running with a Low-Pass filter would be advised. Amp shows no real wear or signs of abuse.probably under that seat for 35 years. 100 Watt 6 Meter (50 Mhz) MRF492 Brick Amplifier
Ok- here's the story and what I know about this amplifier: I purchased this amplifier at the local hamfest over the summer. The guy just said it was a 6 meter amp and that he had used it for contests or vacations to the Caribbean or something like that. No problem. I bought it since it was sitting there toward the end. The price was right, and I have a 10 watt radio. Several months have now passed. My 6 meter station is languishing- my antenna project is stalled. I finally get around to hooking this thing up and testing it. I assumed it was some older commercial-built amp as it had some lettering on the front that was kind of rubbed off. Was not able to match it to anything I found on-line. I opened it and looked up the transistor- MRF492. Internet tells me: It appears to be an N4LTA design from a 1990 QST magazine article. There is a ... morefair amount of information available on-line and the board looks the same as some other pictures I see on-line. I did hook it up and perform some rudimentary testing and it seems to be working. With a 12 volt supply and about 5 watts drive I am getting 80 watts out. It will probably do more. But that has satisfied my curiosity. Due to the nature of this home brew item and my limited testing equipment- this is going to be an as-is item. Which is how it came to me. I think the case may be scavenged from some old commercial amp- so that's why it has some random lettering on it. Anyway. It seems well built and I would keep it- but I have a bunch of other things to finish(like the antenna) before I worry about power output. Ha! Let me know if you have any questions.
