VERY RARE BOOK Condition:The pages are clean and supple. There is no foxing nor folds other then some corners. There are no other stains due to handling. There are some minor edge tears; ... moreand the Berkeley/Jefferson County outline maps are on the same page back to back with a tear on the corner now repaired with archival book tape. Some of the maps are browned due to newspaper articles inserted between the page. If you have a specific map you want to see. Please write and I will post it. The pages are firmly bound to the binding material. However, the leather and cloth covers are worn out. The covers are attached to the binding by an old cloth tape repair which is failing. The spine covering is missing. The book should be rebound but we decline to do this because we have found that often old map books are disbound and the maps individually framed or sold. He was nicknamed"Pathfinder of the Seas" and"Father of Modern Oceanography and Naval Meteorology" and later. Scientist of the Seas, due to the publication of his extensive works in his books, especially Physical Geography of the Sea(1855) the first extensive and comprehensive book on oceanography to be published. Maury made many important new contributions to charting winds and ocean currents, including ocean lanes for passing ships at sea. In 1825 at age 19. This auction is for a World War II photo album that contains 97 black and white photos. And several newspaper clippings. Some of the photos are marked"OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH NOT TO BE USED FOR PUBLICATION by order of the chief of bureau of AERO. Some of these Official Photos appear to depict actual battle scenes. In addition to the photos, there is a 38 page typed document titled"Task Force 58" which may have been recorded by the owner of the album, LT J. G. Guy Rogers Jr. The document provides a detailed account of the operations of the USS Maury from 26 October 1943 to approximately 19 June 1944. The album belonged to a Lieutenant LT J. G. Guy Rogers Jr. who served as an Officer on the Destroyer Maury, commissioned in 1938, as the 1st of her high speed, 1,500 ton class, and was in every maor engagement in the Pacific, following ... morePearl Harbor. Rogers may have been from Wichita Falls Texas, as the newspaper refers to him as a"Wichitan" He was a very handsome man, but one can see that he aged a lot, over a 2 year period of combat. Rogers received a Presidential Unit Citation, after 14 months, with the famed USS Maury, in Pacific warfare. In this album, Rogers chronicals his time in the Navy, beginning 16 July 1943, to 2 November 1943. However, the photos go beyond that point to 1944. Maury's Wind and Current Chart - No. Pacific, c. 1859, good condition
This is an undated chart of the North Pacific. By Matthew Fontaine Maury, pioneer oceanographer and cartographer, commissioned by the U.S. government to produce detailed charts of Atlantic and Pacific Oceans(see Wikipedia for entry on Maury) The chart references many vessels and their tracks, with dates, the most recent I could find being 1859. It is designated series A-8, and drawn by W.C.B.S. Porter(a navy lieutenant who apparently was lost at sea in 1861) Measuring 26 1/2" by 36 3/4" The chart covers from the equator to 40 degrees north, in the Pacific west of Hawaii, and shows a heavy concentration of ships(by name and date) and their voyage tracks in the area between 15 and 25 degrees north latitude, along with many symbols for wind speed/direction and currents. See detail photos to appreciate the craftsmanship of the drawing. ... moreWhat's very special about this chart is a hand-drawn chart on the reverse side. Covering from the equator to 13 degrees south, with latitude and longitude markings on the border(see pix) There are at least three references to the ship Santiago. With her courses in 1857 and 1859, a number of islands noted, and a handmade blue compass rose glued into the center. I found one reference to the Santiago online in the archives of the Peabody Essex Museum, but have no other information. In my opinion. This chart is in good condition, but some might call it"fair" because of a number of stains and areas of discoloration, along with some wrinkling. With battens at each end, the chart was designed to be rolled and unrolled, and shows some use. I can't accept returns of this chart because of the chance of mishandling. It will be mailed in a tube.
