According to the EAPG Pattern Identification on-line site this pattern was called Optica and production began around 1903. There is a painted purple/ lavender band around the circumference of the lid. This band is showing considerable wear. The white and blue dot decorations appear to be in very good condition. The gold decoration that was on the outside edge of scalloped design on the base is showing considerable wear. The only gold remaining is on the inner edges of the pattern. The ... moregold on the lid is also showing wear: Originally there was a gold band above and below the purple. Most of these lines are gone. Only the edges can still be seen. The top of the knob was also gold decorated. Enough still exists to let one know the tip was completely covered at one time. There are no chips. Cracks or repairs. It does have some light scratches on its inner surface as well as light scratches elsewhere, the result of storage and handling. It measures approx. dia. on the rim of the base) 7-5/8" and is stands about 6-1/2" tall. This Northwood covered butter is still in really nice shape considering it would be over a century old. I believe it shows the wear of use. Time and handling, but it was handled with care. It would be a great example of pattern and decoration. Our photos are a large part of our description. It is completely in Portugese. And this particular copy has been in a library in Lisbon(not clear which one) All 6 fold-out illustrations are accounted for, which depicts technical drawings of various optical problems. The book is crudely bound in a combination of cloth and paper. Which all seem original. The whole volume has been extensively damaged by humidity with warping of the boards and stained, wrinkly pages(fold-outs included) as a consequence. Which avoid being eaten by blending in with surrounding rocks. They are often known as pebble plants or living stones. The formation of the name from the greek"ops" means that even a single plant is called ... morea Lithops. Individual Lithops plants consist of one or more pairs of bulbous. Almost fused leaves opposite to each other and hardly any stem. The slit between the leaves contains the meristem and produces flowers and new leaves. The leaves of Lithops are mostly buried below the surface of the soil. With a partially or completely translucent top surface or window allowing light to enter the interior of the leaves for photosynthesis. During winter a new leaf pair.
