SILVER SPARK GAP FROM A 1920s DIATHERMY MACHINE - TESLA COIL PROJECT?
You are looking at a set of adjustable silver spark gaps from a vintage Tesla type diathermy machine. These spark gaps are very finely made and would grace any spark gap Tesla Coil. They date to around 1920 when spark-gap diathermy machines were popular and are made to a very high standard. There is one fixed gap and one adjustable gap. The gap being altered by screwing it in or out using the Bakelite knob. The heat sinks are solid copper disks 1 1/2” in diameter and the diameter of the silver spark gap tips is 1/2” The spark gaps all have their mounting nuts and bolts. Ready to be mounted on an insulating plate. In the original machine this would have been a marble control panel and the fourth picture shows a Fischer diathermy machine in action with a similar type of spark gap, although this has tungsten tips and sparks purple. When I started into building Tesla Coils. It wasn't long before I wanted a Rotary Gap for my Neon Transformer based coil. In over 100 hours of searching, I found the parts I needed were hard to come by. To get a true synchronous gap I needed a motor that operated as a salient pole type synchronous motor. My only option seemed to be to convert a standard type motor by"grinding or machining the armature" of a standard motor. Not ... moreacceptable. Wireless Era Spark Gap on Porcelain Base Up for auction is a super early Spark Gap Assembly on a Porcelain Base. This is a rare and primitive spark gap that dates back to the 1912-1915 wireless period and is a heavy well-manufactured piece. There is no makers name on the unit but the large heavy duty knobs at each end closely resemble those used by the Wireless Specialty Company on many of their early sending and receiving apparatus. All of the other components are also high quality professional grade material. A similiar spark gap appears on page 96 of The Duck catalog#11 but does not have the larger Wireless Specialty Company type knobs. This early spark gap is in good condition other than a tiny chip on the edge of the porcelain base and a tinier faint hairline just below it. Great condition Thompson Plaster X-Ray Co. portable high frequency machine[otherwise known as a Quack Medicine Device] I've found numerous references to the Thompson-Plaster Co online and one mention that they may have been associated with the Fisher electrical/medical company as well. Circa 1920-1930 era[at a guess anyway] Borders the line between legitimate and quack medicine. It appears to be quite complete in a nicely fitted case with all manner of accessories in the lid. I've tried to shoot pictures of all aspects of the machine. including several showing it in operation. The original power cord[included] had literally melted where it had been stored for many years on the left side of the marble ... morepanel. I have cleaned most of the sticky rubber debris off but it would benefit from additional cleaning. I used clip leads to power it[visible at the top left of the pictures in operation] As expected. lots of noise and a good light show from both the adjustable spark gap and the secondary terminals where the high voltage is developed. I didn't fool with it too much but did draw 1" sparks between the secondaries. Interior of the machine is clean and doesn't show any evidence of arc over or other electrical problems. cool glass tubing insulation on some of the coil leads. Well made throughout and in great condition for its age. The outer case is in good shape with several spots where the covering material has flaked or rubbed. still very presentable. Nice addition to a collection of early medical/electrical devices. It measures approx 17" X9" X 11" deep[case closed] and very well packed shipping weight will be 41 pounds from zip code 24012. 1917-1919 Wireless Transmitter Spark Gap Here's a nice adjustable wireless transmitter Spark Gap. I found this pictured and described in a 1919 William B. Duck catalog as a precision instrument with finely nickeled upright posts. Split at the tops to firmly hold the adjustments in place. The electrodes are zinc, renewable and are mounted on a white porcelain base. It's in good condition with small chip on the bottom edge and a a small hairline that is firm, but not broken. Antique KELEKET SPHERE SPARK GAP X-RAY MACHINE VTG Tesla Medical XRAY Coil Tube
Here is something very unusual- a huge Keleket X-Ray Apparatus Co. Covington KY USA sphere spark gap- am guessing is from the 1920's- with 4" dia. ball electrodes. Is 37-1/2" long fully open, is'calibrated' to 180KV, but the gap opens to over 6" so at 40KV per inch it would take 250KV/ 250,000 volts. This looks to be a museum piece, is in what I would call excellent antique condition, is certainly VG, all of the metal looks like is nickel plated and no pitting at all. Is controlled remotely by a string or insulating cord, and the gearing and pulleys all working fine. Note that the kilovolt scale shows its age and one end has been taped into place. Have been wondering as to how this was used, perhaps to protect the X-ray tube from too much voltage, would like to see the size of the X Ray tube that was used with this ... moresphere spark gap! An unusual early X-Ray electrical item, I have never seen another one like this!

A 1927 edition of the Hawkins Questions and Answers Electrical guide on the subject of Telegraphy Wireless signals. Morse code and spark gap transmitters. As well as other interesting sections on Electric Bells and Electrical lighting and lamps. The section on Telegraphy cover approximately 40% of the book with Electrical bells and Lighting the rest. Of great interest to the Vintage radio and Telegraphy collector. The book itself measures approximately 6.5 x 4.75 inches, and in quite good condition apart from the first 20 odd pages have some watermark type staining, but not too bad for great age.
