I believe it is called a planer gage or guage. It is used in the machining trade to check heights of parts. It is adjustable for the different lengths it will be set at. It is a heavy triangular piece of steel with a notched groove running down one side of it. There is another steel piece attached to it that slides up or down on the groove and can be locked into place by a thumbscrew. The triangular piece is about 6" long by 3 7/8" tall. Total weight is 2 pounds. 11 ounces. The name of the previous owner and the number 44 are engraved on one side. I'm really not sure what this is. I believe it is called an angle plate or angle block. It is made of two heavy steel plates held together by a heavy duty hinge mechanism. This tool is made by the L.S. Starrett Tool Co. of Athol. Massachusetts. They were the biggest and probably the best known precision tool maker in the U.S. I don't know exactly how it works. I've been told that it measures speed of precision equipment of some kind. This is an earlier version as the handle is steel. I have more of these.
