Offered for auction is a very nice and well preserved set of three sequential Stanhope single microscopes with different magnifications. The largest of which having the lowest magnification(estimated at 10X) the middle having the middle magnification(about 20X) and the smallest having the highest(about 30X) The lenses are set each in silver wires held within a silvered handle. The two larger items end with a chatelaine styled hook, typical of the 19 th century. The smallest one has a groove at the end of the handle that probably housed a wire hook too. The Stanhope single microscope: This type of simple microscope was invented by Charles. The third Earl of Stanhope(1753-1816) It is a cylinder of glass with each end curved outwards, one ... morebeing more convex than the other. The focal length of the apparatus is short and the objects to be studied are placed close to or in contact with the less curved end. In the catalogue published by F.L. Both of these microscopes need attention so are offered'As Seen' The larger and older cast iron framed'Octopus" is complete apart from the mirror and stage clips, and is in good condition for its age retaining most of the original instrument black finish, The smaller ESL microscope is missing the mirror and horse shoe mount, but retains the original stage clips. The barrel of the mount needs new friction felt, but otherwise this is a good instrument just needing tidying and touching up. Leitz Trinocular Head for Microscopes See pictures for condition. I got this 20 years ago and would guess it was 1980-1090 vintage. I don't know the model. The trinocular on top is for a camera. When pull one of the knobs on the side in splits the light between eyepieces and camera path. The mounting ring on the bottom is 1.95 inch diameter(a little over 49 mm) This was salvaged off of a very big and expensive custom semi-conductor instrument. I assume it is top quality. It was not used in a bio lab. It has been sitting on my shelf in a box for over 20 years. Unused. Ask questions. You surely know more than me about optics.
