VINTAGE SARTORIUS BALANCE Offered is a vintage balance made in Gottingen. Germany by Sartorius-Werke. Florenz Sartorius started making balances around 1870, his company still thrives around the world today. This is a Model DP3. It introduced many innovative features, such as the air-damped oscillation reducer and the dial-a-weight selector mechanism. Pan arrest systems were common in those days, but an artificial source of reflected light used to improve balance ops was a quantum leap. In this case, the light source is aimed straight through the rear port lens, then passes through a small hole in the column. It continues to a set of mirrors and lenses, then finally to the viewing screen front and center. It's rather primitive by today's standards, but certainly displays sound mechanics. The original exterior 6V light source is long ... moregone, but fortunately it is actually not needed for the balance to function using conventional methods. A powerful little LED flashlight or a cable optic light source both substitute nicely for the stock lighting equipment. Viewing the screen is probably even brighter and clearer than with the 6V setup. Condition overall is flawless. Nothing has been replaced. Broken, repaired, refinished, or polished- everything is original. It has a 200 gram capacity(each pan) and is easily calibrated to 1/10th of a milligram. Assembly after shipping will undoubtedly require a slight re-calibration. All of the eight original sequentially heavier ring weights are present. These ring weights and the selection dial mechanism allow for weighing matter up to.999 of a gram without the use of additional weights on the opposite pan for achieving static equilibrium. Apparently this balance was once the Property of Long Beach CA, it's use remains unknown. I think it was made just after WW II, some 60 odd years ago. Up for auction is an incredible original condition 1920's pharmacy brass analytical scale made by Christian Becker Inc. of New York. This scale is a piece of amazing craftsmanship. The woodworking and metal work involved to create this is on a very high level. This scale appears to be original and fully functional. I am not a scale expert but and it needs to be calibrated as one side dips slightly when the release lever lets go. The front door has two counterweights that allow you to slowly open the door without disturbing the contents. I see no damage at all to this rare scale. Interesting to note. There are three adjustable feet on the bottom and two glass bubble levels at the base of the brass center post. This was proudly displayed in a Pharmacy or office. It is so beautiful! I bought this at an estate sale in Columbus Ohio at what appeared to be a dentist or dental instructor. I am selling it as is. But I will tell you that is appears to be in good working condition. All the weights are inside and they all go up and down on the balance beam as the dials are turned on the front of the machine. This thing is really a great piece just in studying the cog gears that add and subtract weights from the scale as the dials are turned. The weights go down to the size of just a thin hoop of wire. I am sure it will need some adjustments. I put a new bulb in it, and there is another spare on the back. There is a little bit of corrorsion on the inside metal part that the tray sits on. Doesn't appear that it would affect anything. I didn't try to scrub it off. Any questions please feel free to ask. Antique/Vintage Central Scientific Weight Set for Analytical Balance in Wood Box
I acquired this weight set at an auction. And I don't know anything about these types of things. The wood box says"Central Scientific" on the top. There are 12 pieces in the set as pictured. I do not know if all of these weights are all original to the set or not. It looks like there is a slot for tweezers or something, but there are no tweezers. The box has dings/scratches/scuffs/dust as normal with something old like this. The weights also have scuffing or residue on them. This is sold as is-what you see is what you get.
