This book was originally published in 1982 and then reprinted in 1987 by Stemgash Publishing Company. It covers the history of Fairbanks engines as well as a brief part in the beginning about the Fairbanks Eclipse windmill and also Fairbanks scales. Fairbanks. As you know, is one of the largest engine manufactures from days gone by and produced a wide variety of engines and many different horse powers and ratings, both stationary and portable in single cylinder and multiple cylinder engines. This is a very well put together book with lots of information as well as old photographs and copies of advertisements. The book is 100 pages in length and measures 8 1/2 by 11. '49 REO MOTORS 552A Gas Engine 1 1/2hp -rope start- for REEL MOWER VTG MINI BIKE
This is a vintage rope-start. Gas powered engine from the REO Motor Co. This is their Model 552-A, and was originally designed to power the 1949'Royale' Reel Lawn Mower from REO. This saw life in between as the power source of a home-made farm Mini-bike from whence I rescued it. This is a 1 1/2 hp. engine and includes the original cylindrical gas tank. The engine measures about 10 by 10 by 11 in. with a 1 1/2 in. power gear. This has some wear: the tank has a dent in one side/the carb has some moderate tarnish-corrosion/the rest has moderate rust patching/overall moderate greasiness-soiling-this has compression but has not been otherwise tested. a story from the SmokStak site: I have a 552 on a coaster wagon my dad built for me in 1959 i mounted the engine with its entire clutch and drive assembly. And used a bicycle gear on the wheel ... moreof the cart. i used to drive it all over the place, before I got my license, and only got pestered once. I was driving it in a parking lot, whan a cop stopped me and told me to take the machine home. He said it was making too much noise! I told him his cop car made more noise than my engine, and he got POed. He got out of the car, and looked at the engine, and says"It's running? Yeah it was. You could hear the valves but not the engine. Well, take it home anyway, and don't run the engine on the street" He then pulled away. i coasted to the top of the street that crossed my home street, and seeing no one around, popped the clutch and drove the cart home. I pulled it right into the garage, shut off the engine and got off the cart, and turned around. There was the cop, standing in the driveway! I told you not to use the engine on the street. Do you know how fast you were going on that thing? 50 Miles an hour! if I see you on the road again, I'm going to take it away! Fat chance I thought, I know the chief, and he lives next door!
