Their sensitivity varies over 1000 times(That’s 10,0000% Do you want to spend hours looking for small leaks with an insensitive leak detector for the refrigerant you are looking for? Do you want to use a leak detector that is only sensitive to 50 parts per million R410a instead of 0.2 parts per million? Parts per million is a measure of how much refrigerant is in the air. I can guarantee that you are going to miss a lot of small 1 pound per year R410a leaks with a majority of the leak detectors that I have tested. I created this report out of necessity. I have been in the HVAC business for 20 years and HCFC R410a and Puron have really made finding leaks difficult. The tried and true R22 leak detectors from 10 years ago don't pick up R410a or Puron. The reliable Bacharach H10 is 100x less sensitive to R410a compared to R22. Which leak detector do you want to use? You are probably like me and want to use the absolute most sensitive leak detector to find leaks in less than 60 seconds. That is what I did for 20 years on R22. But. I had to buy an $8000 Inficon HLD4000 to get decent R410a sensitivity. AFTER BUYING ALL THE POPULAR LEAK DETECTORS, I have found a couple that are just as sensitive as an $8000 Inficon. They have the strictest air quality laws in the country, their standard of refrigerant leak is ounces per year and as a State Certified Auditor, I had to audit every a/c + r unit under my care yearly for leaks. This is a K-D Tools Model 2348 Refrigerant Leak Detector. It is a vintage unit that looks like it was manufactured in the mid 60's with a classic retro style. It comes with the original operating instruction pamphlet. I have tested this unit with two C batteries(not included) It turns on and when you adjust the sensitivity knob it starts to squeal. When the sensitivity is properly adjusted. It makes a steady stream of clicks when placed in the"Go" mode. I do not have access to a source of refrigerant, so I was not able to fully test the detection capability. There appears to be a spare sensor tip packed inside the battery compartment. This unit has had one owner and was extremely well kept as this was fairly hefty investment when purchased new many years ago. In speaking with the manufacturer. The newer(and more modern) Metrotech leak detectors sell for over $10,000 so while used(and older technology) this Model 200L remains a very reliable and affordable alternative to purchasing new. I suspect this will be a fairly expensive purchase so bear with me as I will provide extensive details on the unit to help you with your buying decision. About the Unit Being Offered Included with the Model 200L are the original headphones. Sound cup and two operating manuals. In addition, ... morethere are 2 new 9 Volt Eveready#276 batteries, alligator clips and a flat head screwdriver. The overall condition of the Model 200L is quite good if not excellent. It is mounted in a rugged(and very clean) travel case. I recently had the unit tested by a professional HVAC person and confirmed it is working as designed. Regarding the batteries. This unit originally used similar batteries that you found in old transistor radios and are now difficult if not impossible to find. The manufacturer recommended the Eveready#276 which I was able find on eBay and at Batteriesinaflash.com. While the Eveready#276 works well with the unit, it cannot be connected and stored under the sound board like the old transistor radio batteries. They need to be directly connected to the leads externally or via the included alligator clips. Take a look at the photos for more information. One more comment on the batteries. The unit has a built-in battery tester that I'm not certain is as accurate with the 9 Volt Eveready batteries as it may have been with the older batteries. This unit powers up and appears to be in excellent condition. It does need a new battery installed and that is why I cannot test its functionality. It is very well designed and built to last. Cabinet is gauge steel and includes all components. No marks or wear showing. Comes with carry case and strap that show some age. Please view photos for additional description.
