Original patina black wash or fumed finish on this dramatic early 1900's rocking chair. Attributed to the furniture manufacturer Karpen based on its purchase with a labeled Karpen piece(not included in this sale) of identical material. Finish, and design. Original leather upholstry had worn, so the chair has been reupholstered using synthetic materials. Original large semi-circular brass tacks on the top of the rocker back were reused. Some gluing will be necesary to tighten the left arm joint in this otherwise well made piece of furniture. A very confortable, substantial rocking chair. This particular one has some glass imperfections including a light irregular interior line about 1cm down from the top. And on one end of the top lip there is a raised dimple that was never shaved down correctly with a small indentation which could be an old bubble burst at time of manufacture. There are also a few small bubbles in the base. This piece measures 6 1/2 cm tall. It is unmarked and the actual maker as well as date of manufacture are not known to us. One is a stone cork marked WYETH both sides, the last is a glass stopper marked WYETH and on reverse COLLYRIUM. All of them are glass and are panneled. The screw top piece has a few very small nips around the bottom where it meets the bottle. Otherwise these are in very nice condition. The stone cork itself has some wear but it looks like that is just how they were made. These measure from 4 to 5 1/2 cm tall. Although they have been wiped it down but each eyewash bath in our collection could use a complete cleaning for display. These items went out of use following the advent of eye drops. There is one small area(Pic# 4) where they missed when sewing the binding and it appears to have frayed in the wash(probably easily repaired) but it is otherwise in very good condition with no stains or holes. Wine Office Court and the Cheshire Cheese. London. Pencil and wash sketch ex. the Winter family collection. 8" x 7" Titled on back with various reference numbers. This is from a group of sketches which I am in the process of unpacking and sorting inherited in the past from various members of my Winter family and the majority of the contents were from the studios of Cornelius Jansen Walter Winter 1817-1891 and later that of his son Holmes 1851-1935 at the time of their deaths. With some of the works there could be a possibility that they were by Holmes or an unfinished sketch by Cornelius and later completed by Holmes. However Cornelius was also a great collector of works by other artists as evidenced by the four day sale of works of art. Books etc. held after his death. I think this is from the hand of Holmes. Walter Winter was ... moreborn in Bungay in 1817 and as an adult adopted the forenames of Cornelius Jansen; at or about the time of his marriage he moved to Great Yarmouth and fter a short period in Gorleston took up residence in Norwich in which city he deceased in 1891. He executed a number of commissions for the Norfolk and Norwich Archaeological Society; Dawson Turners. Captain Manby and other well-known Norfolk personages. Before moving to Norwich he also embraced the new art of photography. Holmes Edwin Cornelius Winter was born in Great Yarmouth in 1851 and unlike his two older brothers was not sent to the local Boarding School where his father was an attending Drawing Master; he resided at home and moved with Cornelius to Norwich where he attended the Norwich School of Art; a friend from boyhood days with the artist Frederick Kitton they would go on walking tours sketching the various locations through which they passed. Soon after his marriage Holmes moved to the vicinity of St.Albans in Hertfordshire where in 1935 he deceased. Beautiful Walnut Bachelors Chest with Retracting Towel Rack on the Side.This piece has nice carving at the bottom. Carved acorn handles, and lovely back-splash. The top is in fine condition as well as the rest of the chest. It has 3 dovetailed drawers. There are some stains on the inside of the drawers that appear to be ink.
