Helen Kalvak was born at Tahiryuak Lake, on Victoria Island and raised in the Prince Albert Sound area. Her family also spent some time at Minto Inlet. She lived a traditional Inuit lifestyle for most of her life. Her mother was Enataomik. Her father Halukhit encouraged her spiritual gifts and taught her to be an angakok( shaman) Although Kalvak later converted to Christianity. She continued to reflect her shamanism in her artwork, along with the stories which she had learned as a child. Later years In 1960. Kalvak moved to Holman(present-day Ulukhaktok) after the sudden death of her husband, Edward Manayok. There in 1961 she helped a Roman Catholic priest. Rev. Henri Tardy, set up the Holman Eskimo Co-op. It was at this time that Kalvak began her artwork. In 1965. Her artwork was turned into prints and sold throughout the world. Ten years later. It is in good condition having been protected in frame(not selling in frame) but the paper is slightly darkening near edges from age. Vera designed popular late midcentury linens. Napkins, tablecloths etc. Her designs are recognizable and collectable. This print is quite rare. She gave these as gifts and they were also used in retail department store advertising. This auction is for an amazing Sudanese tribal print on linen. The print is done in black and is of what we assume is a sudanese effigy. It is super modernist in it's design. Since we do mid 20th century items we purchased it since it struck us as very mid century in design. However. We are not sure of it's age. It is signed as you can see in the pictures but we have absolutely no idea what it reads other than the Sudan at the bottom. Mark was born in 1953 and is a member of the Wewaikum Band in Campbell River. His father. The late Chief Sam Henderson, was a well known Kwakiutl carver. His mother, the late Mae Quocksister Henderson, was the eldest daughter of a high ranking native family. Mark says they were a major influence on his early artistic development. They wanted me to be familiar with my cultural background, and taught me legends, songs and dances that have been part of my family heritage for many generations. Mark began painting traditional Kwakiutl designs at the age of eleven under his father's guidance. He also studied the work of other Kwakiutl artists. For sale is a silkscreen“Haida Killer Whale” by Haida artist Bill Reid(1920-1998) Perhaps the best known Canadian Northwest Coast native artist of the 20 th century. A few of his many pivotal contributions was his role in reviving native art through his studying of historical techniques of native design. His carving abilities first in precious metals in jewelry and later in wood and other mediums. And most importantly, his ability to communicate to a much wider audience. Between 1972 and 1981 Reid produced ten prints, all of which read as single-creature images centered on the paper- one of them being the Haida Killer Whale. These prints are distinguished by the precision. Elegance and refinement of form that characterize all he does. In particular. Haida art is known for its bold, uncluttered look, the purity of its forms and the refined ... moresense of balance that governs their use. In addition. The colors black and red are adhered to by the Haida print makers. Killer whale is a very important crest and mythic being recognized as clan ancestors and commonly depicted in Northwest Coast art. They are associated with strength. Dignity, prosperity and longevity. This particular print is not signed however. As it was Purchased from an Estate Sale that I purchased along with a Lot of Native American Items. I took the Print out of the frame to check it out. TAOS ART STUDIOS" On the Picture Frame Backing. It has descriptions of the picture and artist as shown in the pictures. Frame Measures Approx. 29" x 23" Print Itself Measures Approx. 19 1/2" x 14" Matte Border shows signs of wear and finger prints as shown in the pictures. Print looks to be in decent condition except for some waviness as shown in the pictures. Frame ... moreis pretty beat up with scraps and dings.
