Metal Oil Derrick / Oilwell Drilling Rig Model / Nice Trophy or Gift
These are two really nice high quality models of Standard Oil Derricks/ Drilling Rigs. Nice models like these are rare. I purchased both of these over 30 years ago. They have a lot of detail with drillpipe standing in the derrick, a drilling line with crown sheaves and an actual set of blocks. They have production trees/ wellheads attached to the base with 2 casing valves, a single master valve and dual flowline valves. The larger one has a 9" x 9" base and is 23" tall. the smaller one has a 6" x 6' base and is 14 1/2" tall. The derricks look to be both constructed with brazing rods and the remainder of the items are brass plated. The larger rig has a small split part of the way across the base which could be easily glued or replaced with wood, granite or whatever one prefers. I attempted to include good photos ... moreto show the nice craftsmanship and quality put into these by the builder but my photos don't do them justise. They are a bit dusty but they are both in excellent condition except for the split in the larger base as you can see in the photos. Antique Yellow Dog Derrick Lantern Oil Well Supply Co Pittsburgh Rusty& Cool! Description: Up for sale is a Yellow Dog Derrick Lamp made by the Oil Well Supply Company in PIttsburgh PA! This rusty and crusty relic from the American Oil Industries early beginnings was found in the basement of a great old house. This piece is in good condition on one side but well rusted on the other and the bottom. It does have some cracks in the bottom. These cracks kind of look like they may have been caused by an explosion as they have distorted the bottom outward. Take a look at the photos and you decide! This piece measures about 13" across from the outer tips of each spout x 7" tall. It still has the wire handle but is missing the lid. This piece is quite heavy weighing in at 11 lbs! This is an original piece of history of American history ... morethat would make a great conversation piece! About this lantern from the website Oil150.com: The first official U. S. paten t for the derrick lamp was issued May 3. 1870 t o Jonathan Dillen. A native of Petroleum Centre. Dillen Pennsylvania. Patented a crude design of the Derrick L amp. He claimed his invention related to"hanging lamps or torches for illuminating places out of doors. Especially in and about derricks, and machinery in the oil regions. Whereby explosions are more other places” Derrick Lamp” Hiram Freeman. Also from Petroleum Centre, obtained a U. S. patent for his"Safety Derrick Lamp‟ in 1872. Freeman's changes to Dillen's design included a screw on lid, screw on end caps, and removable spouts. In 1877, Dillen was reissued his patent. And it was assigned to John Eaton and E. H. Cole of the Oil Well Supply Company. Oil Well Supply Co. was the prominent manufacturer of yellow dog lanterns in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The company was founded in 1867 by John Eaton. E. H. Cole and Edward Goodwin Burnham soon joined. And in 1875, the company was called"Eaton, Cole, and Burnham Co. In 1878. The company's name changed

It measures 13" across at its widest point and measures 7" tall. It does not have the origional handle or lid. What you see is what you will be getting. I pulled some information from www.oil150.com. Here is what they have to say about the piece. Yellow Dog Lantern” is the field name for a derrick lamp. These lamps consist of a metal container with two spouts. Each holding a cotton wick to absorb the fuel oil. When lit, the lantern produces a very yellow light. According to legend. yellow dogs” received their name because when burning at night, their flames look like glowing dog eyes from a distance. Other accounts claim the name stems from the fact that a lit derrick lamp casts a dog-like shadow ... moreon the ground. Yellow dog lanterns were used to light areas around oil derricks. Because of the dangerous conditions around oil derricks. Proper lighting was very important. However, while darkness itself created a hazard, unsafe lighting, like open flames or ground fires, was also dangerous and could. Cause the oil derrick to catch fire. Derrick lamps had to be able to withstand a twenty-foot drop to the ground. And had to utilize crude oil as their fuel source. Chrome Oil Derrick Drilling TriCone bit 6 1/2 inch V3S, 9 inches tall, 27 lbs.
This is a very old Oil Derrick Rock Drilling Cone bit that is chrome but you can see where allot of chrome has off. Especially under the tricone bit gears. Very Unique and weighs 27 pounds. It stands 9 inches tall. Awesome piece of decoration. I do not believe it will function as a bit and I know nothing else about it, if it does function I would not know how to tell. Use and storage Dimensions: aprox. 7 1/2" high with lid. 13" wide; weight 14 lbs has the original lid. The hang handle appears original- has had covers added on chains for the wicks- these aren't original to the Yellow Dog but I am sure they were quite useful in the field- they can be easily removed with the chain if you desire to take them off- This is a rare and awesome collectible piece of oil field history. This is a old printers block. Its what printer`s used to use to print advertising. It can still be used for printing or just for memorabilia. Its made of copper and is mounted on a wood block. WOW- what a great find in top notch condition! Up for your consideration is a hard to find oil derrick lamp from the Frick and Lindsay Company circa early 1900's. Heavy cast iron. Front is marked FRICK AND LINDSAY PITTSBURG. Nice condition. No cracks or breaks. Stands over 7 inches tall(not including the handle) and 13 1/2 inches at the widest point. The number 203 is embossed into the spout on the right. The handle and chain affixed to the handle is original. The wooden lid is handmade(although whomever made it did a nice job) There is a tiny bit of surface rust inside of the right spout- you can just see it peaking out in the picture.
