Letterpress Steel Composing Table......Newspaper Turtle
Well. I pondered, and I pondered but I am moving and need to lighten the load. This is 1 of 2. Newspaper Turtles. Used to Compose a'form' within a Letterpress'chase. Turtles were made to roll across the composition room of the newspaper while the'composer' assembled his various fonts from the gallies. Zincs for photos, and furniture, Slugs, and Reglets to get the correct spacing and'page layout' assigned to that particuler'employee composer. On any day. There were probably OVER 100 composers rolling these around the layout room as the paper was getting ready to go to print. I have looked for the past 2 days all over the internet. I could not find 1 Turtle for sale. I know alot of these got melted down in the day and demise that newspapers went to film and metal plates for offset presses. I am willing to sale ... moremy Turtle for $900. I paid just under this, + shipping from Canada when I originally purchased it 9 years ago. Weight is APPROX. 200 lbs. very. Very heavy steel legs, wheels, and heavy top. Many fabricating shops repurposed these as fitting tables back in the 60's and 70's as they were'decommissioned' by the papers. This would be perfect for anyone doing a lockup on a Chandler& Price 12 x 18 on down. I have used it to do lockup on my 28 x 32 Heidelberg Cylinder Press. You know. There is cheap, and there is cheap. I don't have anything cheap. I have very nice things. Items that are a joy to own, items that have been taken care of since they were purchased new. As if they meant something and were important. My Great Grandfather purchased this slug cutter back in the 1930's. my father as a boy of 12 stood on a wooden crate and ran the presses because he wasn't tall enough to do it from the floor. He used this slug cutter while preparing his letterpress forms. When I was a boy of 8 years old. I spent many days studying under master craftsmen learning how to properly prepare my letterpress forms.and I used this slug cutter. I wiped it off just the other day. I was amazed at how beautiful this piece is after nearly 100 years on our shop floor. Like new. Like all of our equipment because we as a family ... moredidn't have much. Marsh Stencil Cutter Model R - 1 inch Hand Operated Letter Number Die-Cut
This auction is for a Marsh Model R- 1 inch stencil cutter only. There are no instructions nor oil board. This stencil cutter was retired from a local school. It has been in storage for a long time. Everything moves freely. But is missing a part underneath that locks a lever in place to slide the oil board in place. Also, when the board is in place(inserting manually holding the lever down) after pushing the lever down to cut a letter/number. the board does not advance after the handle retracts. I'm not sure why this occurs. This hand powered machine will require service. It's currently not in proper working condition. Also, I will not ship this item since I cannot pick it up. Chandler & Price 14 1/2 x 22 letterpress printing press
Your looking at a Chandler& Price 14 1/2 x 22. From the what I've gathered it was manufactured in 1931. This press is big and runs smoothly. I purchased this last year and refurbished it myself. Which means I took it all apart. Cleaned 80 years of ink and grease off of it, welded any cracks, painted it and put it back together. You won't find a cleaner/ shinier press. The only cracks on the press were on the roller arms. I had them professionally welded and should last a long time. The press comes with 4 rollers that need to be recovered. I did an embossing job on the press and that is it. The only thing the press is missing is the bottom gear that turns the inner inking disk. The motor is 220V, 1 hp@ 1165 rpm which turns the machine too fast for my liking. You must spin the machine by hand in order to get it going. I've been ... moresearching for a variable speed motor but if it sells before I find one then so be it. The press comes with 2 chases, a platen wrench, and tools to assist pulling the rollers. This press is in my garage at my residence. Local pick up preferred but willing to ship if arranged by buyer. Shipping must take place within 3 weeks of purchase. Vintage Craftsman Victory Letterpress Manual Hand Operated Printing Press Rare!
For your consideration is this vintage. Hard to find, Craftsman Machinery CO, Boston Mass, letterpress, printing press. I know little about these. My research indicates that this is a Victory model. In very solid condition with little rust. One thing that I found interesting is the Craftsman name in the casting on the side is missing an"a" As shown in the photos, it is spelt Crftsman, not Craftsman. The flat metal plate( I think is called the platen) measures about 7 3/4" by 5 1/2" The rollers are missing. The metal bracket and wood tray that holds the paper is also missing. There are four bolts that have been replaced. One is a hinge bolt, One of the bolts that attaches the platen and the two bolts that attach the bracket that holds the round ink plate. These bolts are two long and are interfering with the lever that ... moreturns the round plate. These should be visible in the photos and a easy fix with the proper bolts. Not sure if there is anything else missing. Otherwise, mechanically, it appears to be in working condition. Very hefty piece of equipment weighing in at 54 pounds. This press was manufactured in December of 1951. This press has been completely dis-assembled and stripped down to the cast iron. All cast iron parts have been painted with 2 coats of primer. 2 coats of color and a clear coat. Mating surfaces have be masked as to allow proper contact when re-assembled. The raised type in the press castings have been detailed with gold paint. All pivot rods have been thoroughly cleaned and lubricated upon re-assembly. The press is mounted to an oak base that has been stained and coated with a satin polyurethane. The mounting screws are new and made of stainless steel. There are 4 rubber feet secured with new stainless screws to the underside of the base to keep the press from walking while printing. This press has new rollers and new locking trucks. I have added an extension onto the chase bed latch as to ... morekeep the gripper latch spring away from the press frame. The chase bed latch spring is new and made of stainless steel.
