And you thought QWERTY was hard to use! This wonderful old Smith Premier typewriter may date back as far as 1908. It has separate keys for upper case and lower case! All of them seem to be working. Though definitely need cleaning and lubrication. I am not sure what some of the odd keys are for. The platen is designed to lift upward for some sort of typing tricks but in the process. Actually can be lifted off easily, so care must be taken then(easy to put back though) There is a ribbon that feeds from the back. The gold graphics still look good and crisp. Minor scratches and scrapes have no detracted from this old typewriter at all. GREAT display item. If you get it cleaned and oiled and fixed up. Would make a wonderful mental torture device as well. LOL! A little history of this machine from The Virtual Typewriter Museum(online) The Smith ... morePremier 10 was the last in the legendary line of Smith Premier full keyboard typewriters. It was also the only front-strike typewriter with a full keyboard ever built. And it was the last of the Smith Premiers that were produced by the Smith Premier Typewriter Company itself. There is more than the double keyboard that reminds us of the earlier SP typewriters. A very odd feature for instance is the fact that the platen of the SP10 can be lifted. As if it were an up-strike blind writer. The only advantage of this is that the platen can be easily taken off the machine. That in turn is necessary to replace the ribbon, that was fixed in the back of the machine. The ribbon itself had to be fed under carriage, up through the ribbon vibrator and back down under the carriage. The construction of the SP10 was not as sturdy as that of earlier models. Particularly the rods used to drive the type against the paper. Were now made of wire. When the Smith Premier Company finished business. This was not the end of the legendary name. Here is an Antique Underwood Standard Typewriter. It has no model number that I can find but my research tells me it’s a Model No. 3. This is a harder-to-find Model than most Underwoods. This carriage is designed for accounting and bookkeeping and made to accommodate a ledger size sheet of paper with a 14.5-inch rubber roll. Its outside dimensions are approximately 17 inches long(not including outside platen knobs) and 12 inches from front to back and 9 inches tall. This typewriter is in very good condition. It is very clean for its age and has been well taken care of. The paint is all original and in good condition with all the original stenciling intact. The keys are all in good condition and all work fine. It types 12 characters=1 inch. The only issue I could find is the space bar will only start working if you center the page in the platen. ... moreI believe the front top bar has a slight bend and has caused the space bar be slightly off-balance. But since the platen is large there is plenty of room to place the paper towards the center of the roller so the space bar will function properly. The serial number in photo two says"1986" from what I have found, that indicates that this press was manufactured in 1890, but I have never used this press other than spinning it over by hand and via the electric motor retrofitted onto it. The press(and the four Hamilton typeset cabinets full of typeset and shapes/designs) are in my basement. Unfortunately our basement does not have good access to get the press out. It will have to be disassembled to get it up the stairs and out. It appears from research that this printer weighs 2550 pounds. 1928 Royal Typewriter Parts for Repair Platen Knobs Roller Glass Spools Feet
This is for the original parts shown that came off a 1928 model Royal Typewriter. The serial number is X-1244099. The internet typewriter Database lists it as 1928. This is the platen knobs and roller. 2 glass side plates, ribbon spools, space bar, metal top cover parts and the rubber feet. Included also are some of the screws. One glass side is broken. The rubber feet are pretty good, some cracks in the rubber and rust. The roller is is good shape- the rubber part measures 9 7/8" long. One ribbon spool is metal, the other is plastic.
