1814 ORIGINAL EARLY AMERICAN MASONIC APRON FRAMED IN 1/4 SAWN OAK BEHIND GLASS
This is a beautifully framed original Masonic apron from 1814(if not earlier) The frame measures 29" x 31" and is executed out of quarter sawn oak with a raised scroll pattern around the edge. A few small pieces of the scroll work have snapped off over time. The glass is in fine condition. The frame is tight and sound. Having not been opened since the apron was framed. The apron measures(including the fringe) 19 1/2" x 23 1/4" Crafted out of silk. The decorations are hand colored and inked with great attention paid to detail. The symbolic elements include: Two pillars(or columns) the alter with an open bible, three candles each on a stand, Noah's ark, the globe, an armillary sphere, a trowel, compass, square, level, beehive, sun, moon, stars, etc. The apron is mounted onto a backing board that looks to have a texture ... moresimilar to morocco, though I'm uncertain what kind of material it is. On the backing board, beneath the apron appears, Presentd to Covenant 758 By Bro. William C. Woolsack April 8, 1914" To the left of this is the date 1814, and on the right, 1914. The apron was gifted by Brother Woolsack to commerate a centennial celebration of some kind, perhaps the age of the lodge. Certainly a generous gift no matter what the reason or when given. The apron shows typical soiling associated with age, though not quite as toned as it appears in the photo. There are no tears. An apron such as this would never have been worn at a general meeting, but a more important ritual gathering such as an installation. From what I could find. The Covenant Lodge 758 was(is? in Brooklyn, New York. William C. Woolsack, was a resident New York, living in Brooklyn. He served in the 56th New York Volunteers during the Civil War and was a member of the Covenant Lodge. Such early American Masonic aprons are quite rare. This is a vintage Mammy String Holder from the 1940s or 50s. There are no chips. But she has overall crazing, consistent with a piece of this age. There are a couple of hairline cracks on the back, but the piece is solid overall. The string holder is about 7" tall and about 4" at widest part. Mammy wears a green and gold plaid apron over a blue and gold polka dot dress. Her original red kerchief has lost its color. But the original hanging loop is still there. This apron is made of silks cream color and a very deep purple trim. The cornacoupia is made of heavy gold colored braided threads. It has purple tassels and there are no visable tears or holes. The frame measures 18"x 18"x 7" deep. Frame is in excellent condition as well. I have not removed the apron from the frame. This is not a new apron,I believe the frame is from the 1850's. Some minor discoloration on fabric. This item weighs 18 pound as pictured. Very Heavy

Antique apron from the Hont region of southern Slovakia. These aprons are quite special as they combine a variety of embroidery and decoration techniques to create a striking effect. The waistband section is embroidered with cross-stitch motifs and the bottom features both satin stitch and chain stitch in the design. The multicolored, hand-tied fringe along the bottom gives the apron a particularly cheerful look. There are no holes or tears, but there are a couple of stains in the center of the red section of the apron as shown ... morein the photos below. These stains are partially concealed by the pleats.
