African antique metal and bead Cache-Sexe. Modesty, pubic apron, from the Kirdi tribe in Cameroon and Nigeria. Item came from the large estate of a long time Santa Fe collector and dealer in African art. He had a gallery in Santa Fe in the 1960's and bought most of his things in the 1960's and 1970's. Many of the things I was lucky to buy were rare. At first I thought this item was a necklace. But found almost the same piece in the book"Africa Adorned" by Angela Fisher, copyright 1984, where she showed a Kirdi woman wearing a"picuran" as they are called there, with a similar brass and copper plaque and chain hanging, but this one has metal"nail" forms between the red beads, which research shows to be"phallic" symbols, sometimes also made and used as currency items. Both Fisher in"Africa ... moreAdorned" and Lois Sherr Dubin in her book“The History of Beads” states that the cache-sexes“were worn by women and girls for protection and to attract attention. This has the look of a late 18th century apron and does the right dimensions also has a slot for threading cord or ribbon across the top edge. A gorgeous. Victorian, circa 1900-1910s black apron. It is in wonderful condition for its age. Center of apron is a beautiful black raw silk with wonderful brown vertical lines in it. Next is a pretty row of black trim. The final, outer section is the most beautiful wide, black, Victorian lace. Lace is 4 1/2" wide. At the two lower corners-where lace meets the silk- there are two black ribbon bows with a silk brocade flower. Apron is in wonderful condition. It measures 25" tall by 22" wide.
