These were used by pleasure boats for navigation, the use the broadcast am stations as well as beacons that used to exist in the 200 to 300 range below am broadcast radio to find out your present location, i believe you rotated the antenna on top and check the meter on the radio for signal strength to discover the directions of the known signal but i am not sure it looks to be in good condition but as i have no way to check it out you are buying as is, it is missing the rod antenna, thanks for looking and good luck"
