Vintage 503 Porter Cable Locomotive Belt Sander 3" X 24" Very Early Model, Nice!
This is an original Porter Cable#503 belt sander in excellent condition. A classic! I found this sander at an estate sale here locally and learned it was owned by a cabinet maker who took exceptional care of his tools. This sander was stored on the shelf in a heated shop and it shows. It's in great shape. Everything is original on this sander. There is no type indicator on this tool, it is one of the very first models made before typing began. This sander starts quickly and immediately gets up to speed. The drive wheel is in fantastic shape with solid rubber that is not decayed or cracked. The front wheel is straight and there is no evidence of it having been dropped or abused. These sanders are heavy and are frequently dropped which breaks the handle or the front left wheel mount. Not this tool. Nothing is cracked or damaged and everything ... moreis where it should be and operates correctly. These sanders are commonly called Locomotive sanders because of their profile and shape. This Porter Cable 503 is considered by many to be the best belt sander ever made. This sander was excetionally expensive to buy when new. The locomotive sanders have gained a following among collectors and users alike. They are very heavy(16 pounds) and extremely durable with a classic design that is both functional and handsome. There are just a few light scratches and the expected storage marks. No dents or deep scratches. It's in remarkable condition. The cord is in great shape as is the strain relief junction piece. The handle is in excellent shape. No chips or cracks and the trigger operates with a positive click. The thin metal platen is in good condition with some discoloration and light rust. This is a replaceable part if necessary and still made. This is a classic sander in outstanding condition, ready for your collection or bench. I sell at a fair price, and my descriptions are very accurate. This listing is for one Vintage Porter-Cable 3" x 24" 9amp model A3 Take- About hand held belt sander. The tool you see in the photos is the tool you will get. Look at the photos carefully. There is much detail to see. This sander. Known by some as the"Locomotive Style" is a classic workhorse and was built in Syracuse, NY. It has no issues and runs perfectly. There is full power and very little sparking at the brushes. It has a new Porter-Cable grounded power cord and a new cork and metal ... moreplaten. The front wheel needle bearings were cleaned and greased. The oil was changed and filled to the proper level. It's chain drive was cleaned and re-greased. The switch clicks right on and can stay on with the press of a button. The belt tracking is smooth and effortless. The inner belt wear bar shows little use. The drive wheel is smooth and clean. No broken or dented parts on the frame. Comes with a new tube of Porter-Cable special purpose grease. The balance and weight of these sanders is perfect. Clearly the nicest hand held belt sanders ever built. Sadly these are no longer made because they just became too expensive to produce, and they lasted too long. Made in the day when you repaired your tools instead of throwing them away. Vintage Porter-Cable A3 Belt Sander Locomotive 3 x 24 Early Model 504 503 NICE!
Welcome. This listing is for the Porter-Cable model A-3 Hand Held Belt Sander you see here in the photos. Serial number A11681. This is an early model with the flat handle. Notice the fit between the front and rear castings. Hardly noticeable! This sander is in amazing condition and works properly. No dents. Broken off parts or even scratches! The motor is strong, showing barely any wear on the commutator with very little sparking at the brushes. The tool features it's original front and rear handles. It has been fitted with a new Porter-Cable 3 prong power cord and a new Porter-Cable cork and steel belt platen. The switch is properly grounded and works perfectly. The oil level has been checked, and the other moving parts such as the belt tracking system and the front wheel needle bearings have been cleaned and greased. Belt tracking ... moreis effortless. Rear drive wheel is clean and looks fine. These sanders are the very best hand held belt sanders ever made. This 16 lb. machine should provide many years of use, and can be repaired if necessary. Bill for parts and labor was 327.00. Two covers were soda blasted primed. I couldn't find a paint close enough in color to satisfy me so they are still in primer.
