1940 Magazine Illustration "Nora Singing" by Jay Hyde Barnum with Short Story...
Beautiful magazine illustration by noted artist and illustrator Jay Hyde Barnum. It was rescued from a damaged May 18. 1940 issue of COLLIER'S magazine. The excellent illustration accompanies a short story titled"Good Hunting" by Charlotte Hall. It happens to be a one page story, so it is complete, along with the great drawing. Edge of the page was trimmed when it was removed from the magazine. The magazine page measures 10 1/4" x 13 1/2" The actual illustration measures approx. 5 1/4" x 13" There are minor bends or wrinkles along bottom left edge. But these should not be an issue if illustration is matted or framed. The art does run to the left edge of the page. There are some minor scuffs or marks along this edge, but not enough to really distract from the art. Use the eBay"zoom" feature to get ... morereal close-up look. Reverse side of page has parts of an unrelated story with a 1/2 page illustration. I'll place the page in a plastic sleeve and secure between two pieces of white foam core for mailing by USPS First Class in a bubble envelope. Some info on the illustrator follows: 1888- 1962) Jay Hyde Barnum was born in Geneva. Ohio. He attended the Cleveland Art School and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He also studied in Woodstock, New York with Bellows, Speicher and Kroll. He made his home in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York. He was an author, illustrator of books for children and a commercial illustrator. The books he wrote and illustrated are The New Fire Engine, The Little Old Truck, and Motorcycle Dog; he also illustrated books by other authors. Many of his illustrations appeared in Life, Colliers and other well-known magazines. He was selected by his peers to become a member of the Silvermine Arts Guild in 1930. In 1947 he received honorable mention in the competition for the Caldecott Medal for his illustration of the book Boats on the River, by Marjorie Flack.

The show started in Boston and then toured the United States until the year 1908. The sword features a heavy bronze handle and a curved yataghan style blade. It is in good condition with a natural patina to it that one would expect. There are a couple of areas where there is some extemely minor rust that could be easily removed through normal restoration. But I will leave that to you experts. It measures about 28" in total length from end to end. A real piece of history.
