The sheet measures slightly under 11 x 16 inches in size. It is in Fine condition. With one light smudge line across its bottom third. The page feature an article taking up over 2/3rds of the page. Titled MARINE AND LAND HERMIT CRABS. And featuring four small wood engraved illustrations. Antique Scientific Brass Demonstration Gyroscope Weight 1.68 LB Brass Rotor Diameter 3 7/8" Wooden Rotor Diameter 3 3/4" Length 16 1/2" Pedestal 7" This is a beautiful brass gyroscope of unknown origin. I purchased this at the"Age of Reason" in Westport. CT about 30 years ago. The gyroscope works fine and spins freely. The gyroscope frame is not a true round due to many years of demonstrations. A Dremel with a rubber cylindrical attachment should be used to spin this gyroscope due to its age. I think spinning with the aid of a string would be too stressful. However there are two nubs on the spin axis of the rotor for the use of a string. The counter weight does not have the original connecting hardware so I attached a strong black string that was originally designed for the tuner section of an old receiver. This lamp runs on 115 volts. 60 Watts, 60 Cycles. This specific lamp was owned by the University of Illinois Geology Department and was possibly used to illuminate mineral specimens under high powered microscopes. About Us, Shipping, A VICTORIAN SCIENTIFIC MAGIC LANTERN. Description: Offered is an unusually small and compact scientific magic lantern. The lantern has a ivorine lable for‘Archer& Sons. Liverpool’ The lantern is of unusual form as It can be used as a traditional lantern with a slide carrier when the front is closed up or as a scientific lantern when the front is propped up with the mirror backed wooden plate. The lantern sits on a polished wooden base with a hinge at tone end so it can be inclined to the required angle. The body of the lantern is made of French polished mahogany with lacquered brass fittings. The inside of the body is made of blackened tin plate with a lamp holder on a sliding tray. The body has two doors. One to each side, with red coloured glass windows behind brass covers. At the front of the main housing is a large ... moreglass condenser in front of which is a fold up/down wooden frame. On the front of the frame are two screws and a latch that allows the user to lock in place a slide carrier. This panel can be folded up at 90degrees and a mirror backed piece of mahogany put in place to reflect the light. The lens has a 90degree glass prism to reflect the image onto a wall. The lantern comes with 2 interchangeable lenses, a 6inch and an 8inch. Please note: for shipping the long focussing rod at the front unscrews. Condition: Cosmetically the lantern has seen plenty of use with the heat of the lamp having dulled the French polish on the doors and at the back. The tin plate has some minor surface rust. The rest of the lantern and the lens assembly at the front is all in good condition as is the mahogany slide carrier. Optically the lenses are all good clear and un damaged. This is a rare autograph book of the alumni of the class of 1862 New London Literary& Scientific Institution of New London. New Hampshire. This book, that belonged to Horace E. Andrews, contains 58 messages and autographs from fellow classmates all dated in the spring and summer of 1862. The New London Literary& Scientific Institution was originally the New Hampton Literary& Theological Institution. The name was changed in 1858. Then in 1878. The name was changed to the Colby Academy. In 1975, it became Colby-Sawyer College of New London, New Hampshire. There is also a tuition receipt from Dartmouth College for $17.00 dated Sept. 5. 1862. Those were the days! The owner of the book must have been attending Dartmouth in the fall. The book measures 8" x 5 1/4" The covers are beautifully embossed leather with gold embellishment ... moreon the front. The condition is very good. The pages are clean and there are many empty pages. COLORADO ANEMOMETERS Mechanical anemometers are an instrument used to determine the volume of air entering or exiting mine workings. They were invented by Benjamin Biram. House steward to the Earl Fitzwilliam, owner of numerous collieries in South Yorkshire, England, in 1844. The formula used most often in mine ventilation using an anemometer was q=av. In which q equals the number of feet of air per minute, a equals the area of the airway in square feet and v equals velocity of air current in feet per minute. It's minimum assembled height is 17" but through a series of levers and gears it can be raised up to 24" Comes is a great old oak box- with a key!
