I think it is suppose to show film on a piece of white paper on table reflecting from mirror. Reader turns on but I have not figured out how it works. Reader. Lens etc. needs a serious cleaning. When wounded GIs were in VA hospitals during and after WWII. Some were unable to hold books or magazines in their hands. Some had to remain on their backs, immobilized. The VA and Red Cross solicited donation of these Argus microfilm ceiling readers which projected microfilmed magazine and book titles into the ceiling. See newspaper clipping above, An early version of the Nook and Kindle! This unit is not functional as sold. It needs the following parts: A/C power cord, two pronged, similar to old projectors. Lens. Remote control unit that plugs into side of projector housing that advances or rewinds the microfilm reel. Lens mount appears to be standard threaded. None of the odd lenses I have will fit. Unit can be used for horizontal projection with an optional mirror. Since I have none of these. The unit remains untested, thus sold for parts ... moreor repair only. It comes with superior optics. Such as a condenser, lamp and reflector. New lamps are available for $36. Unit sold for $120 in 1946. It is non-functional in its present condition, which is unknown. Eugene Dietzgen 4317-20 Microfilm Reader Projector 115V. 60Hz, 500 watts 25" wide x 18" high viewing area 25" wide x 29" deep x 30" high overall. This machine was from a surplus of equipment at the LBJ state government bldg. here in Austin. TX. Working. 1503 lamp bulb burnt out when I took pictures. they are available on ebay for 5-10 dollars. The optics could use a general cleaning. There are various scratches and scuffs to the cabinet from previous use and handling. There are scratches on the frosted glass. I see various spots where accessories or something like that would go. So please make sure you take a good look at the pictures to see what is included and what isn't. I don't have any film to further test this reader with. When I use all the controls everything seems to be in order and functions as it ... moreshould. When I hit rewind and fast forward I can hear a motor adjusting and working accordingly inside the item but the wheels do not turn, There could be a belt that needs to be replaced. I am not sure.
