Illinois in 1906 for $125.00, the 3 horsepower"Bill" ... moreengine is somewhat of an enigma. A patent was issued to William A. Downing for the design but it is not known how many were actually produced, if any. The very simple and attractive engine was probably intended for light duty work such as pumping water, powering a grinding wheel or a small dynamo, etc. A listing for the"Bill" can be found on page 141 of American Gasoline Engines Since 1872 by C.H. Wendel. This is an approximate 1/3 scale model of the 1906"Bill" engine. It runs on propane gas. On liquid fuel. Due to the remoteness from the engine, the mixer soon gets cold from liquid fuel vaporization and after that the fuel doesn't vaporize very well which results in ragged operation. A propane demand valve was made for it and running on propane solves that problem. I have to presume that the prototype engine encountered the same problems(it may have ran on illuminating gas) but there was no propane to the rescue back in those days! Engine operation on propane is a big plus. Valves and spark plug stay very clean and there is no smelly exhaust! I have been changing the crankcase oil every 10 running hours since break-in but it still looks new. So I am going to extend it to 20 hours. This wouldn't be the case using a liquid fuel. Bill" is machined and fabricated primarily of brass bar stock. The only castings used are the pipe elbows. The crankshaft runs on ball bearings. The cylinder has a cast iron liner and the piston is aluminum alloy. The plans set consists of 18 pages of drawings plus a page of construction notes. The cylinder, piston and head are of cast iron bar stock; and the flywheel is of mild steel. The engine is air cooled by fan(belt driven or electric) although it will also operate without one. Spark advance/retard is adjustable while the engine is running. The carburetor is an easy to build type with adjustable speed control and an air cleaner. The engine will run an hour or so on 2 ounces of fuel. You will need a 6" lathe and a small milling machine with a 6" diameter rotary table. This engine should be as easy for beginners to build as any. And easier than most because the engine frame is so simple. The model runs from 500 RPM idle to around 1.800 RPM or so wide open and the sound is real nice with the right exhaust pipe at about 800 RPM. First off let me say that I am not sure what this is. I purchased a large lot of vintage model airplane plans that are all in binders. Th ese ha ve literally hundreds of plan pages in each of them. I say plans but I am not 100% sure that is what they are. Some names I saw were Hellcat and Avenger and Bearcat- tons more! The books w ere compiled in 1975 but some of the dates I saw at a quick glance on the plans were 1937. 193 9. 1950s and 1960s. I counted the pages on one of the medium size binders and there were 260 pages some have more than one model on a page. The books are binders with metal band so you can remove the ones you want. Great Lakes Schooner 3 Masted Blueprint Drawing Plans 2 Large Pages
Great Lakes Three Masted Cargo Schooner Plans consists of 2 PAGES that measure 19” x 29” each and a smaller page that measures 18” x 24” Plans are produced on standard type blueprint paper. A detailed set of two blueprints of one of the most familiar schooners on the Great Lakes a hundred years ago the Lucia A. Simpson. A sailing vessel which carries the distinction of being the last of the thousands of three masted schooners which were built and operated on the Great Lakes. The Lucia A. Simpson was built in Manitowoc in 1875 by Rand and Burger. Constructed of oak, the vessel measured 127 ft. long with a 28 foot beam. Late in 1879 the schooner was purchased by E. Golden Filer for use in delivering lumber from the D.L. Filer& Sons at Filer City to the Chicago Market. The vessel spent over twenty uneventful years in this service. Throughout ... moreits life, the Simpson gained a reputation as one of the most beautiful and fastest schooners on the Great Lakes. It was often logged at more than sixteen miles per hour in a fair wind. The year 1886 was perhaps the most eventful for the Lucia A. Simpson during her years in Manistee. On Sept. 12th of that year, shortly after leaving Michigan City, the schooner was struck by winds later described as a"hurricane" which greatly damaged the mast and rigging. The repairs cost over a thousand dollars. Later in the same year on Dec. 1st, the vessel came near to the same fate that destroyed so many of her contemporaries. The schooner was caught by an early winter storm with high winds out of the northwest. As she was already on this side of the lake and seas were too high for an attempt to enter the harbor, the schooner was forced to anchor and ride out the storm. Despite both anchors being out it was never possible to hold a vessel in the high winds and thus the schooner slowly approached the sandy beach. The life saving crew left their Manistee station with the"apparatus: and went to the scene of the impending disaster near Old Freesoil. In most such cases the vessel
