For sale is a Hendey Tool and Gage- Makers lathe. Anyone knowing about these lathes know the high quality and precision parts they are known for. I used this lathe for the last several years. It was only taken out of service about a month ago to make way for a larger lathe. It still runs good and is equipped with some tooling. It comes with a tool post and several holders. 3 jaw chuck, collet closer, and a limited number of collets. You can see from the pictures the lathe is equipped with a taper attachment. Thread dial, wrenches, a 10" 3 jaw chuck rev jaws, 12" 4 jaw chuck, taper attachment, micrometer stop, collet closer for 5C, and change gears. It has less than 1/8 turn backlash in the crossfeed and compound. It is powered by about a 5HP 3 phase motor and is currently wired for 480volt. The ways have no detectable ridges but has some dinges and scratches. The bore is 1 1/2" It runs fine, all functions work as they should. This lathe weighs about 4000 lbs. I used this on a 5" Cushman chuck at the time on a South Bend metal lathe. I no longer have the chuck and therefore it does not fit my new chuck. So I had to make a new one and this one must go. Hendey 12" Gear Head Lathe Metal 12x5 8 Speed
I originally went to look at a vertical mill and the guy selling the mill mentioned he has a lathe he would like to sell too. It was sitting in the corner of his garage under a blanket and initially I didn't want it because it was going to be very difficult to get out of the garage and loaded onto my truck. Long story short I bought this lathe and when I got home my wife told me I can have the lathe or stay married. Not both. I'm not ready for a divorce yet so I need to sell it. It has a 12" swing and the bed is 5' long. It has very little surface rust but it does have years on dust covering it. It will defiantly need some cleaning up prior to using. As far as I can tell it is complete and in working condition. It comes with a 5hp 3ph motor but it is not mounted. From what I can find is that this is a rare lathe sometimes called a"Coat Hook" because the solid brass gear change lever resembles a coat hook. Based on the lathes SN# this info was obtained: Built on January 11. 1921 and is referred to as Eight Speed Gear Head lathe, but in actual fact is a Sixteen Speed lathe when you consider the two speed Countershaft that was normally sent with the lathe. The size of the lathe is 12 x 5, not 10 x 5, and refers to a swing of 12-5/8 inches over the bed and 27-1/4 between centers with the Tailstock flush with the end of the bed. It was shipped with a Taper Attachment and a Precision Lead Screw. The original owner was the Western Electric Company, Chicago, Illinois. These lathes were built from 1907 until 1929. Here is a list of what is included: Tailstock with MT2 taper Taper attachment on carriage 12" 4 jaw chuck 5" 4 jaw chuck 12" face plate Collet adapter and a ton of collets including round. Square, hex, and even rectangle. I have a forklift and am able load into a truck or trailer. Hendey Lathe Sub-headstock & Relieving attachment
Most of the parts are for a"Cone Head" 14" Hendey Lathe. The lathe was sold but these parts remain. There is the subheadstock that clamps to the lathe bed and is driven by a gear that screws onto the spindle threads. The subheadstock is a speed reduction device(3-1) There are numerous parts that attach to the lathe's gearbox area on the left end through a train of various gears to be chosen. The power is transmitted through driveshafts to another geared item on the compound/cross slide. I think this combination of devices are designed to make scrolls. Gear hobbs, gears, milling cutters, end mills etc. The Lathe and its attachments were sold new to Warner Brothers Hollywood Studio in late 1928. The attachments offered here were never used by the studio and never used by the second owner either. Anyone with a 1921~33 era ... moreHendey lathe would definitely need these pieces to enhance their work area's seriousness, and besides, the new owner could make money by betting with visiting machinists as to their function. The Subheadstock would probably fit geared head models also. There's not another offered for sale in the entire world. Hey. The superficial rust displays its patina, shows it's asking for a new owner to restore it to a like new finish after 86 years of idleness. You need to be the only guy on your block to own a Hendey relieving attachment with the Sub headstock. You may notice a few non associated pieces thrown in with the sale and I'm sure all of you Hendey gurus can see that there is undoubtedly a few items missing to make a working outfit, those missing parts were probably used as a prop in a long forgotten movie or as a sinker for Spencer Tracy in"The Old Man and the Sea" I'd estimate all parts to weigh near 300 pounds.
