Overall size is about 6 1/2" by 4" There is a small(1/4" chip on the outside edge of the stone closest to the gear that appears'blue' in the one photo. This is on the outside of the area tha comes in contact with the item being sharppened and has no effect on the sharpening process. I find no markings. Hi you are looking at a Vintage"WESTACO" Western states Cut. Mfg. Co. straight razor sharpening stone. The stone says"Made of Carborundom and Meltone" WESTACO HIGHEST GRADE. WESTERN STATES CUT. MFG CO. BOLDER COLORADO. It sis about 4 inches long and about 1 3/4 inches wide and about 1/2 inch thick. It has some chips and a div-it on the front towards the bottom. Man-made coticule razor hone sharpening stone
Up for sale is a man-made coticule razor hone measuring just under 6" L x 1 1/2" W x 5/8" D. You may be saying to yourself"manmade coticule? What is this guy talking about? Alas. It's true. A long time ago, someone found it prudent and wise to use the remnants from the coticule factory(presumably in Ardennes) pulverize them, and bind them in a chalky medium. Talk about recycling! What you end up with is an incredibly fine finisher with a garnet cutting medium that acts like a fine coticule would when finishing a razor. How do we know it's manmade? It reacts to acid(white vinegar in this case) to form bubbles. Whereas natural coticules do not. Many people have bought these thinking they were coticules and never knew the truth! This stone is lapped on the coticule side. Up to 1000g w/d. In terms of performance. It ... moreis a very slow finisher, and takes upwards of 100 laps to finish an edge. The result is truly a great edge that surpasses most natural coticules in keenness but retains that signature coticule feel. I subjectively rate it at around 10-12k and I believe with a little more practice one might do better. There are some residual oil spots on the stone that have no effect on honing and do not look deep. I didn't find it worth it to lap past them. It is backed by a slate, possibly thuringian though I never lapped it due to its thinness and therefore cannot verify its origin. It appears natural, however. vintage Razor hone natural sharpening stone fine grit unknown origin slurry pics
I have for auction this vintage fine grit natural razor hone. I have no idea of the origins of this stone or what it is called. I can tell you it is very smooth. It is a bluish grey color and it produces a slurry in very quick fashion using 500 grit sand paper. It has a very minor natural layering defect. see picture# 1 just left of center) There is some chips on the edges and some heavy scratches. there is a chip off the top corner. see picture 1) The stone measures 5 7/8' long 1 1/8' wide and 5/8' strong thick.
