Antique B.F. Gleason Portable Folding Wood Mortician Cooling Table Dated 1886
This bid is for an antique dated 1886 Gleason portable folding wood Morticians cooling table. Great condition. Just some minor edge chipping in one edge of the veneer edge which can be seen in the last picture. Folds out nicely and is very solid and strudy. There are cooling holes on the top surpace the spell out B.F. Gleason, Brockport NY, April 18th, 1881 and Sept. 7th 1886. Back in the day when someone died, the mortician would come to the house and prepare the deceased on this table. The funeral or wake would be held in the families parlor, hence the term funeral parlor. Very unique and hard to find item in this condition. Winner pays UPS shipping

RARE Antique Roswell Gleason Oval Fruit Basket Circa 1860-Museum Quality Offered for bids is a 150 year old silver plated oval fruit basket. It was made by Roswell Gleason and Sons. He was a pewtersmith and a tinsmith and a revolutionary silversmith. His work was of the top quality of the age. His works are currently in demand of private collectors and museums. Recently a pair of whale oil lamps made from candlesticks sold for $5.288. at auction. His pieces are sold in the top end auctions and are noted in Kovels and other antique experts. His history: Roswell Gleason. 1799-1887 ROSWELL GLEASON. Who introduced the art of silver-plating in America, was born in Putney, Vt. April 6, 1799, son of Reuben and Sally(Fuller) Gleason. Settling in Dorchester, Mass. in 1818, he associated himself with a Mr. Wilcox in the tinware trade; and on the death ... moreof his partner in 1830 he became sole proprietor of the business. His attention was subsequently diverted to the manufacture of Britannia ware and brass lamp fixtures, which soon became one of the chief industries of Dorchester; and at one time he employed a force of one hundred and twenty-five men. In 1849 he still further increased his business by introducing to the American people the art of silver-plating, thereby placing upon the market a new article of commerce known as plated ware, which immediately sprang into favor among those of moderate means; and he was the pioneer in a business that now constitutes an important branch of the silverware trade. His two sons, on attaining their majority, were each admitted to partnership; and the business was continued until 1871, when, both sons having died, he closed up his affairs and retired. This beautiful oval basket has a 3 dimensional fruit and flower center motif with a handle which matches the design and shape of the bowls' perimeter. The bottom of the bowl. Wearing. Creases, tiny tears, soiling and bug chews along the corners and edges of the covers. The covers are detached from both staples and have tape on the spine. The back cover has a diagonal crease and bug chews along the top edge. All pages are stapled together. Very nice copy in spite of the flaws.
