Original WW1 photograph of Lt Colonel Roger Alvin Poore DSO. Measures 8 x 11.5 inches with photo 5.5 x 7.75 inches. Mounted on card stamped Walter Barnett London photographer. Old ink pen annotation. Small tear to card 3/4 inch ans some corner bends but photo very good. He fought in the Boer War between 1899 and 1902. Where he was mentioned in despatches. He gained the rank of Temporary Major in the service of the Royal Welch Fusiliers. He was decorated with the award of the Companion. Distinguished Service Order(D.S.O. He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel War 1899 in the service of the Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry. He died on 26 December 1917 at age 47, killed in action while attached R W Fusiliers. Following the unexpected death of Mrs Limbu Mr Ashworth was asked to accompany Rambahdur when he initially received his VC and then later was invited to all Victoria Cross and George Cross Association Functions where he took the opportunity to form his collection. Signed Photo Brigadier Manley Angell James VC medal. DSO, MBE, MC. On 21 March 1918. Near Velu Wood France Captain James led his company forward, capturing 27 prisoners and two machine-guns. Although wounded, he refused to leave his company and repulsed three enemy assaults the next day. Two days later, the enemy having ... morebroken through, he made a determined stand, inflicting heavy losses and gaining valuable time for the withdrawal of the guns. After holding out to the last to enable the brigade to be extricated, he led his company forward in a local counter-attack, being again wounded in the process. He was last seen working a machine-gun single-handed, was wounded a third time and eventually taken prisoner. He was discharged from the army in 1919. A Very Interesting WW1 Mounted Bronze Death Placque. 2 7/8 inches diameter. Issued for Col Robert Beech, CMG& DSO, Commanding the 2nd Scottish Horse Yeomanry, Died August 1916. It is all in Very Good condition. We are not experts, but we think this is an Unnoficial Placque, Issued by T& R Annan& Sons, based in Glasgow, who received the Royal Warrant from Queen Victoria in1889. Operation Overlord cover- The Attack on Caen Canal(Pegasus Bridge) and Orne River Bridges- 6 June 1944 signed by Major John Howard DSO In the opening minutes of D Day. 6 June 1944, Major John Howard led his men of the 2nd Battalion the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry in a spectacular airborne assault on the bridge over the Caen Canal. The capture of this bridge and the one over the River Orne was critical as the road they carried was the only supply line from Sword Beach for the 6th Airborne Division, due to land later that day to protect the left flank of the Allied invasion force. The Ox and Bucks took off at 11pm from Tarrant Rushton in Dorset. The 180 men were carried by six Horsa gliders towed by Halifax bombers which cast them off over the French coast at 6.000 feet. He recalled: As we came into land most of us were scared, but our enthusiasm to get the job done overcame the fear. Operation Overlord cover- The silencing of the Merville Battery- 6 June 1944 signed by Lieutenant Colonel Terence Otway DSO Lieutenant-Colonel Terence Otway led the 9th Parachute Battalion in operations on D-Day and was awarded the DSO. The 9th Battalion. Part of 3rd Parachute Brigade, was given the task of destroying the coastal battery at Merville before the seaborne invasion began at dawn on June 6, and afterwards of occupying a key feature of the heavily invested defence perimeter on the Allies' eastern flank. The battery was believed to be equipped with four 150 mm calibre guns capable of laying down fire on Sword Beach. Which was the landing area for the British 3rd Infantry Division. It was guarded by a garrison of 130 within a 15 ft thick and 5 ft high barbed wire fence and surrounded by a minefield 100 yards wide. Boer War/Great War Grenadier Guards Officer's Wilkinson Sword to DSO Colonel
From the History of the Grenadier Guards in the Great War: As the King's Company advanced and took the third objective. Its commander, Captain Drury-Lowe, was killed by a shell while he was consulting Captain Hargreaves of the Irish Guards. He had alraedy gained the DSO in the artillery battery in which he had fought through the first years of the war, and would have no doubt have earned further distinction had he lived, for he was a man without fear and a worthy commander of the King's Company. William was the eldest son of William Drury Nathaniel Drury-Lowe. Formerly Holden, who assumed the name and arms of Lowe in 1849 on inheriting Locko, and the additional surname of Drury in 1884. He was born at 19 Portman Square, London, and educated at Eton. In February 1900 he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Grenadier Guards. ... moreHe served with its 3rd Battalion in South Africa from 1901-1902. He succeeded his father to the Locko estates in 1906,and in July 1908 resigned from the army in the rank of Captain. Right after this, he he entered the Territorial Force and rebadged as a Gunner in the Royal Field Artillery. According to the Distinguished Service Order Book he had commanded the 2nd Derbyshire Battery, 4th North Midland(Howitzer) Brigade of the Royal Field Artillery for 7 years and accompanied it to France as Major. In February 1915 he was appointed to command the 4th North Midland(Howitzer) Brigade but instead requested to rejoin his old Regiment and though he had a promotion he got his way and was posted to the 1st Battalion, Grenadier Guards in 1916. He was so attached to his old Regiment that he(as witnessed above) dropped a rank from Major(brevet Lieutenant Colonel) to Captain. He was killed in action on the Somme in command of the King's Company, 1st Battalion, Grenadier Guards on 25 September 1916. His estates passed to his younger brother John A.E. Drury-Lowe.
