SUPERB VINTAGE SURVEYORS COMPASS DIAL BEARING SIGHT 1900 theodolite level This is a great VINTAGE SUVEYORS' COMPASS DIAL or BEARING SIGHT In my estimation it dates from around the early 20th Century. Circa 1900s but please make up your own mind about this. The compass dial measures approx 8 inches(200mm) tall. Including the mounting bracket, and is made from lacquered brass throughout. The actual compass is approx 2 5/8 inches(68mm) in diameter. The instrument has two sets of sighting slots(at 90 degrees to each other) in the upper body. And one set in the lower body. The upper body can be rotated. By turning the knurled knob at the base. The upper and lower bodys each have ajacent vernier scales. Calibrated in degrees, which move against each other as the sight is rotated, to allow readings to be taken The compass dial has a silvered ... moredegrees scale. And a lever to freeze and un-freeze the compass needle. The letter O to denote west suggests that it is probably French in origin. The instrument works as it should. The mounting socket is approx 11/16 inch(18mm) internal diameter, It is in good original condition with very light wear consistent with its age. But with no damage or repairs. This is a fine example of its type and it would make a great addition to any collection. Brunson 545-190 Precision tilting Level Ex-aerospace scope with the usual calibration putty residue plus you can see some nice paint restoration on the barrel around the reticle adjusters where the putty removal stripped the paint off. Nice overall value on a 545 today. It will be worth more in time when the market warms up! This is not the original hardcase for the instrument, the outer shell is rough but solid enough to protect the decent foam inserts.
