Often over difficult terrain, are always concerned about weight. W. L. E. Gurley made their first lightweight instrument-an aluminum transit-in 1876. But the prohibitive cost of aluminum kept them from manufacturing instruments of this material. Following World War I, Gurley introduced a line of instruments made of an aluminum alloy named Lynite. This transit is of that sort. Gurley termed it a Lightweight Engineers' Transit and sold it, with tripod, for $275. The serial number indicates that it was the 28th instrument that Gurley made in 1930. The horizontal and vertical circles are silvered, graduated every 30 minutes of arc, and read by opposite verniers to single minutes. One standard is marked"PATENT 1731848. Enjoyed the easy set up and accuracy-all ways had surveyors doing form board checks and compared to a two thousand dollar instrument they were always on Q. The easy self leveling Nikon Transit/builders level makes it a snap for anyone to setup and use. The optics are very easily focused and clarity was unsurpassed. I have used several instruments over my construction sites and this Nikon is the fourth one that I have owned-but retirement is here. Anyways this is simple to use and cost is unmatched in comparison to any instrument out there-good luck bidding you can't go wrong with the price.

It is in great shape for its age and use as shown in the pictures. The lens looks great without any scratches or chips but it is dusty from storage. It is marked as shown with the serial number as 19143. It comes with the original wooden box and leather strap. Really cool set up. When I was packing it up and lowering it into the packing peanuts. The leather strap did break. So, I took pictures of it, and also included pictures of it before it broke. I'm sorry: It can of course be replaced with a new piece of leather if you wish. Thanks. SP

Berger Transit/Builders Level with Wooden Case
Listed for auction is a Berger Transit combination Builders Level. This is how this model series was listed in adds from the 1930's to the 50's. It is tan/light brown in color(most are black) and has some nice extras included in the beautiful wooden finger joint case. With the exception of the leather strap(worn through at the buckle)All is in good and functioning condition. I'm not sure what the actual optics are, but it is a professional grade surveyors instrument and they are quite strong. Also included(visible in the pictures) is a matching lens cap, a black light shield for shooting into the sun, a plumb bob, and a calibration tool. Also the box comes with a protective cotton bag(made from bank money sacks) and a surveying job written on graph paper.
