These are made from Aavid's proprietary alloy(Thermalloy" which maximizes the rate of heat dissipation. We are not heatsink experts, but we read a couple of articles on the manufacturer's website. Best we can determine, heatsinks with lower, thicker fins provide better heat dissipation in ambient or static air applications. High, thin fins are better suited for forced air applications. Thus, the heatsinks in this listing would probably be ideal for projects where a fan or other forced air source is unavailable. Certainly, a fan wouldn't hurt anything, but they were probably not designed for one. We obtained a boatload of these at a good price. As a result. Up for sale is a high power. Double fin Wakefield 421A heat sink, equivalent to the Aavid HS-218 heat sink. It akes a TO-3 power transistor, and can dissapate 100 Watts, with a temperature rise of 116 deg C. It has a temperature rise of 58 deg C with 50 watt dissapation. The rises are convective in free air, without forced air cooling. The heat sink has a dark finish, as shown in the photos. I have used these for years in a high power amplifier, dissipating 100W per heat sink. They got quite warm, but the transistors were operating within safe limits. There are eight pieces available.
