This is a GREAT hammer! It is very close to being in"like new" condition. The head IS like new! It is also a railroad hammer. Stamped with"N&W RY" for Norfolk Western Railway which merged with Southern Railway in 1982 to become Norfolk Southern. I purchased this one and some other hammers in an auction near Dublin Virginia, about a 30-minute drive from Roanoke, where Norfolk Western Railway was begun about 150 years ago and the N&W corporate headquarters remained there for almost all of that time. The hammer is a PLUMB, 24 oz, Model FM 24, 15" long, fiberglass handle, no wear, dings, or chips on the head. About 75% of the red fiberglass clear coat is intact, one narrow and shallow 3/4" long strip of fiberglass has chipped, a few scuffs. Good used Plumb(Cooper Tools) masonry hammer. This hammer weighs about 28 ounces including handle so I would assume it is considered a 22 to 24 oz. hammer. The permabond mounted handle is in great condition with just some minor scars. The head is very good. It shows little sign of serious use. The paint on the head is in poor condition(but some of the bar code label still remains) The handle length is about 9 1/4" and the overall length of the head is about 8 1/4" This high quality tool should serve you nearly as well, if not as well as a new one.

Surplus generally sells at a significant discount over a retail store and the lack of packaging or a few scuff marks are the reasons. If you are expecting pristine items with sealed packaging like you would get at Wal Mart, Lowes, etc you need to go pay the full price at those stores! Surplus will not make you happy no matter how much money you have saved. Along these lines we have developed the following condition codes that apply to surplus material from the Government so you know what to expect: New- Never used for its intended purpose. May have a few minor blemishes due to a lack of packaging. Original packaging materials may or may not be present. Example- Wrench never used on a bolt Very Good- An item used a few times shows normal wear from its intended purpose. New items which have a users ID engraved on the item would also fall in this category. 100% functional not bent or broken. Good- An item that shows significant use but is useable for its intended purpose. Item is not bent or broken. Parts Only/ Broken- An item that does not function as intended may need repair or is sold for parts.
