Antique 1878 Siebe Gorman& Co. LTD. Fireman's Smoke Helmet Foot Bellows: Rare& unique 1800's Siebe Gorman& Co. LTD. fireman's smoke helmet foot bellows with brass horn. Made in London. England this served as the firefighters lifeline, supplying air to the helmet which allowed them to go into a burning building. This pump used to pump fresh air into firefighters helmets using the double bellow operation. The heavy brass foot pedal was pressed down and using the tension of the large spring, air was sent to the firefighters helmet. When further advances were made. This piece was modified and the brass horn was added and it was used as an alert system. Item is in excellent condition for being almost 150 years old. The leather is in excellent condition free of any rips, tears or extreme discoloration. The"Siebe Gorman& ... moreCo. LTD. oval shaped plaque shows it's age but is altogether is great shape. The life line instruction plate is made of brass as well and is still nicely readable. The wood and all the metal levers are also in great condition. The brass horn has a large chip at the end of it. It attaches to the box but is not tight. There are odd stains on the horn that in the photos may appear to be cracks but there are NO CRACKS. I do not want to ruin it by trying to fix it or clean it. It needs a good cleaning as well but will leave that for someone who knows how to do it right. Overall this item is in excellent condition. Please Note: this item is in excellent condition but may have flaws associated with actual use. Age, and environmental conditions. see pictures for condition issues. See pictures for condition. Ca. 1878) Smoke Helmet Apparatus Wooden Carrying Box With Name Plaque: This is an extremely rare"Smoke Helmet" wooden box firefighters would use to store and carry around the necessary equipment to battle a fire. It is made by Siebe Gorman& Co. Ltd. London, England in 1878 and was large enough to store the hose, bellows, vest and lifeline, helmet& instruction sheet. This gem we found is in excellent condition for being almost 150 years old. There is obvious of ware to the original green paint. Scratches and minor wood chips due to age. Amazingly the original metal handles, the locking lever& original name plaque still remain. Interestingly, the plaque which is also made of wood reads"Smoke Helments No. 4. I am unsure why this is mis-spelled but may be due to age and origin. There is ... morea small pink piece paper on the upper portion of the box which gives orders for this piece to be disposed of. Were glad it never was. Altogether this box is in amazing condition for its age. It still holds together very well, locks, and the handles although showing signs of rust and patina still move freely. Please see pictures for condition issues. Measurements: 26 inches in H. 19 inches in L& 19 inches in D. Weighs about 30 pounds. Makes an incredible addition if you already have one of Siebe Gorman's bellows or actual helmets. This piece is amazing& a true collectors item. Made in the early 1940's. The pump is attached to a mahogany wood base approximately 38.0" x 14.0" with the folding sides down. The cast iron frame is painted red while everything else is left unpainted. The pump is approximately 22.0" tall and has two iron handles that are 27.25" in length. The weight of the pump is 93 lbs. The pump is in excellent condition for its age. The medium was compressed air or oxygen. Typically the high pressure cylinder were charged to 3.000 psig. The donor cylinder may contain air or oxygen at a pressure as low as 600 psig. The unit is a water sealed reciprocating pump and comprises a single cylinder charged with distilled water so the piston. Glands and valves are all water sealed. On the upstroke of the piston a fresh charge of gas is drawn through the non return inlet valve whilst the previous charge is forced through the delivery valve into the upper chamber. Down To The Ships In The Sea Published 1954 by Hutchinsons& Co. Publishers) Ltd. London. Rarely seen at auction this is one of the historically important diver texts. Harry Grossett was a very well travelled Hard Hat Diver whoes career encompased salvage work in a huge variety of conditions. Harry raised gold and other cargoes. Was bitten by a conger eel, was trapped in a sunken troopship, and buried and under concrete. But that's not all. He has also sawn of human limbs underwater, salvaged human bones and was nearly murdered(twice! underwater in Hong Kong. If that was not enough he was one of the main salvage divers of the German fleet in Scapa Flow and saw diving action in BOTH world wars. The book is largely autobiographical(fair enough considering all the stuff he did) and also looks at the development of standard dress diving ... moreoperations during his 50 years in the business. A fabulous read. No collection of diving books is complete without this one. 256 pages. With 15 pages of black and white photos. This pump is in fair condition for its age. The leather has some cracking but no holes or tears. It pumps air but not enough to blow the horn. The horn had separated at the big joint and it has been epoxied. It would be nice to re solder.
