Offered for your bidding is one the rarest& most exquisite examples of a figural'bust' pattern coin silver serving piece that I have yet seen- in my opinion. The work executed on this piece far surpasses Gorham's famous'Bust' pattern items. This finely detailed fish server was retailed by Braverman& Levy of San Francisco, CA circa 1860's and most likely made by John Wendt of New York. Braverman& Levy opened their San Francisco jewelry business in the 1850's and retailed Wendt's silver items(Wendt was not in the practice of putting his name on his wares, hence much of his work bears only retailer name stamps) The handle has a three dimensional figural human bust, appearing to be of a woman adorned with an elaborate hearstyle and scallop headdress, which terminates into something of a scrolled pedestal. ... moreThe handle is further embellished with engraved decoration leading to the finey hand-chased blade of the piece which has a open-work detail and elaborate shape. Wendt trained in Germany. Came to America and first listed in Boston. 1850 as an engraved. In 1860 assumed supervision of silver production in the newly constructed Manhatten headquarters for Ball Black& Co. As such. His work was almost always stamped just Ball Black& Co. On a limited number of pieces, such as this, his distinctive 925/1000 in shield was added. Classic archaic drinking vessel form. Hand carved anthemion and swirling leaf and vine to centre. Antique Vintage Large 12" H. WENDT TAILOR SHEARS Scissors New York 1850
ANTIQUE H. WENDT 12" TAILOR SHEARS. Obtained from an Estate Sale where it was part of a private collection. Here is an extremely rare very early pair of tailor shears made by the H. Wendt Co. in New York City. I cannot find any other examples of shears or scissors made by this company anywhere on the internet and had great difficulty finding any info on H. Wendt. The only reference I could find was in the book"American Scissors and Shears" by P. R. Pankiewicz on pages 173-175. Apparently Herman Wendt made shears under his own name in the early 1850's, before partnering with Seymour and using both names. His shears were award winning throughout the decade of the 1850's. He received a patent in 1842 for what would become his famous"Patented Shears" This pair is in very good shape for it's age. There is wear ... moreand dings and scratches that add to it's rich patina. But overall it is in nice, working condition. There is no rust, no breaks, and no cracks. The tip of the lower shear is squared off and I cannot tell if this is original- the flattened area is smooth and square with eased or worn edges and does not appear to be a break. The brass pivot is tight with very little play. The shears operate smoothly and feel very comfortable in the hand with the large thumb rest. These shears measure 12 1/2" by 4" overall. Stamped below the brass pivot is the manufacturer's mark. Which reads: H. WENDT PATENTEE NEW YORK" Below that is the number 5. This fork is in the Medallion pattern. Patented in 1862. We would date the fork to somewhere within a few years of the patent date. The back of the handle is marked with the name of the retailer and 925 for sterling silver. The handle of the fork is a simple palmetto stalk. Bearing a cartouche with the crisp profile of a woman with an ancient Greek or Roman hairdo and hairpiece. The back of the medallion has been monogrammed with the initials HML. This was Charles Eisenman's studio which Frank took over in 1893.He later on moved to Boonton N.J. Photo is very clear has some age staining and a few age spots. Mount has scalloped edges and some light staining Back of card has age staining and light spots. Henrietta Moritz age 22 is hand written on the back. I think this is her signature.
