I found these old"SHELL Service is Our Business" letters in a garage. They are old and in rough used condition. Look at the pictures and you will see what I am going to try and describe. The"SHELL" was never mounted. But something happened to the letter"E" it lost it's metallic backing.The letter"H" has a broken edge, and I couldn't find the piece. Some of the letters have smudges and scratches and drips of paint on them. One of the small letter"r's" has a missing mounting peg. The mounting pegs are spring tension. The"SHELL" letters only have mounting tape on them. The"SHELL" letters are 15" tall. I think these would look good on a wall in a garage. The story on these is that they are from the Esso/Exxon station on Sherwood Forest Blvd. in Baton Rouge Louisiana. I acquired them when I was 6 or 7 years old, after Esso made the switch to Exxon, this would be around 1971, or'72, as we moved to a different city in'73. I remember having to trade some used tires that I collected around the neighborhood for these.lol! There is rust where the enamel has flaked off, I have tried to include some good pictures. Up for auction is an early large set of 8" heavy Texaco Porcelain Letters from the 1940's. All original Texaco stock which was never taken off the shelf and used. These have been in my storage for the past 40 years. I bought them from an owner of an old 1930's Texaco Service Station that had been closed for years back in the late 1960's. Each letter is white porcelain and highlighted with black porcelain edges. Very sharp looking and really stand out. Stamped on 5 letters is: INSPECTED BY TEXACO COMPANY. The porcelain letter A was also stamped but when I went to clean it the marking washed off. Some letters show inspection stamps with smudges from where I first sat them on a wet cloth. This fair/carnival outfit ran an average of 6 concessions at each event. Usually working 4-5 events at the same time across NC, SC,GA andFL. Their home base was near Fayetteville NC. The operation started in the late 50's and ran until the late 70's when they sold out. Many of the letters and signs are beyond use. However, the letters and signs you see listed have been cleaned with an organic mixture that removes any dirt, mildew or mold. Most were stored in a metal trailer and if you have ever been to NC in the summer you know the intense heat and humidity they have been xposed to inside the trailer. Thus, the poor condition of the paint. Only the letter is included in this auction. Not the old ride. Just wanted to give you an idea where they came from. The letters are 12 inches high and 8 inches wide and about 1/2 inch thick wood. ... moreThey each have a metal eyelet that was used to hang the letters on a board. Doing it this way they could change the sign without making a new one. The carnival was operated thoughout the southeast and midsouth from the late 50's through the 60's. The letters were in barrels and boxes and as you can see have suffered some abuse. Some are white. Some are blue, some are red, but all are scraped up and look like they have been painted several times over the years.
