I don’t even think it goes back 200 years. Probably the earliest would be around 1880. None of that was done in the United States; it was done in Germany and some places in Europe, possibly England too. In the U.S. and sand-painted signs were popular. Sand painting is wood with a powder coat with a gritty material on it. Porcelain didn’t come to the United States until the. The first manufacturer was Enameled Iron Company in Pennsylvania. And then a couple others started to branch off at the turn of the century. We had Ingram-Richardson, which was the huge one in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, and we had Baltimore Enamel& Novelty, which was also a huge company. There were ... morea lot of other companies, but none as large as Ingram-Richardson or Baltimore Enamel. The United States had to actually import all these techniques from Europe. Including some of the labor force. They would solicit people that were versed in this from England and elsewhere, and I have seen several examples of porcelain enamel advertising used to promote manufacturing porcelain enamel. Vintage Men and Ladies Metal Sign Restroom Sign
These 2 signs came from a wood working factory that has been empty for the past decade. Each sign is 11"x2 3/4" The signs were in use in the factory for 30-40 years. The signs were recovered directly above the doorways to the bathrooms. The ladies sign looks like it may be a newer piece. I really am not an expert on signs. So in the picture is what you get.

THE TIKIS ORIGINAL VINTAGE RESTAURANT BAR RESTROOM SIGN This is an ORIGINAL VINTAGE SIGN from the TIKIS BAR& RESTAURANT. I bought this from DANNY BALZ on the SVEN KIRSTEN Expedition to the TIKIS as seen on Page 13 of THE BOOK OF TIKI. The Tikis was a large entertainment complex with Bar& Restaurant. Elaborately landscaped with tikis and volcanos, and featuring a polynesian show. The Tikis could accomodate groups up to 1,500, and was able to entertain up to 3,000 people in one night. Sometime after 1970, owner Danny Balsz divorced his wife, Doris Samson, and The Tikis closed. Balsz attempted to recreate The Tikis in nearly Lake Elsinore.
