With no torn pages, writing, or markings of any kind, not even shelf wear at its lower edges. The dust jacket shows typical aging signs: two small tears. A few little edge nicks, and some discoloration. Its outside edge, in addition to somewhat darker discoloration, has two small stains on the upper area. Following the advice of a college librarian. Also a friend, we purposely avoided all possible attempts to clean/restore the jacket, since it’d most likely reduce value to collectors] A little history behind it: We purchased this book in late 1977. Not long after it was released, and brought it with us during our first trip ever to the Catskills, ... morein April of 1978. Soon after our arrival we visited the Darbee’s residence. Where we immediately spotted Harry in the yard–pushing a wheel barrel, wearing leather gloves- cleaning his bird cages. Upon greeting us he proceeded with a true enthusiastic attitude to show us all about his birds–perhaps no more than 12—15 those days. Mostly of several dun shades- each in an individual, very clean cage. He opened several of them and. Bird-in-hand, showed us their prime feathers, making emphasis in their unique color, length, flexibility, and low web content. True indeed was the fact that feather color appeared to be somewhat different than those we had a chance to see until then, our early tying days. In addition. He pointed to areas of the birds’ neck, where most feathers were missing. He further explained it was because he plucked them to be used in their tying, and allowed to grow again–apparently of the same quality of those previously removed. He then invited us in the house. H G 'Tap' Tapply bass bug he created in the'30s. &1940 mag he edited
The late H G'Tap' Tapply is probably best remembered for his Tap's Tips column that first appeared in Field and Stream in 1950 and was carried even past his retirement as Associate Editor in 1985. Before that he was the editor of Hunting and Fishing Magazine in the 1930' 40's I have included as a free add on, a 1940 copy of Hunting and Fishing, the 5 cent magazine HG Tapley edited and he is so listed. He developed this deer hair-bucktail tail bass bug after fishing with Joe Messenger's deer hair frog. But didn't like it buzzing by his ear. I believe he created it about 1938. He did not tie flies commercially. But often gave one or two to friends. They are a rare find. I got this one in the Catskill Fly Fishing Museum's fund raiser banquet.
